SUMMARY:Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) Conference
DESCRIPTION:This conference showcases research undertaken by Educational Psychologists and trainee Educational Psychologists in educational contexts using Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as an analytical and theoretical framework. \nTopics include: \n\nEducational Psychologists research practice\nCare-experienced children\nEducational Psychologists service delivery to schools\nHow Trainee Educational Psychologists learn at university and on placement\nDecision-making for specialist school placements.\n\nAn open discussion/Q&A session will follow the presentations and abstracts are available on the eventbrite page. \nCultural-historical activity theory\nCHAT-informed approaches are now being used increasingly in educational contexts from early years through to higher education focusing upon learning\, change and development at both the individual and systemic levels (Edwards\, 2017; Hedegaard & Edwards\, 2019; Leadbetter\, 2017; Gedera & Williams\, 2016). Viewed through a CHAT lens\, the educational contexts within which Trainee Educational Psychologists learn\, and Educational Psychologists work\, can be viewed as interacting activity systems (Leadbetter\, 2017). \nThis complex landscape can be characterised as having tensions and contradictions within and across children’s services as professionals work collaboratively to support children and families. Tensions occur around professional roles\, tools and resources used\, and the policy/practice/ethical frameworks that underpin professional activity. CHAT conceptual and analytical tools are useful to gain insight into how professionals understand and have a shared purpose or object of their collaborative practice\, the actions undertaken and with whom\, and the tools used to achieve this purpose.

SUMMARY:UCL DEdPsy Leading Edge Day 2021 : Equality\, diversity and inclusion; working towards anti-racist EP practice
DESCRIPTION:In March 2020\, the world as we knew it changed. The death of George Floyd triggered widespread reflection\, and action in recognition of structural racism across our society. March also saw the UK’s first national lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic which\, in turn\, brought into sharp focus the social inequalities present in our society (Marmot et al.\, 2010\, 2020). Since then\, debates have been ongoing across international contexts\, across professions\, within psychology and within educational psychology regarding where we are and where we want and need to be in the future. This online conference will contribute to debates already ongoing around racism and ethnicity in educational psychology and will provide participants with a chance to hear about theory and research and to focus on challenges\, as well as future directions. In addition\, in the afternoon participants will be able to attend two workshops out of a choice of four presented by educational psychologists engaged in research and practice in this area.

SUMMARY:Education Futures in Action: Scherto Gill
DESCRIPTION:Education Futures in Action is a partnership between States of Mind and the Institute of Education\, University College London. Our July conference will show how the English education system impacts young people and present actionable alternatives to the educational status quo. \nTalks will be led by a range of education innovators from home and abroad\, including young people\, teachers\, academics and other change makers. Some are innovating within the current school system\, others are re-envisioning and enacting ways of educating that promote consent\, democracy\, self-determination and the celebration of diversity. Evidence is clear: the English education system is underpinned by ideologies that promote coercion\, standardisation and segregation. This conference will show how it is possible to do things differently. \nFrom Autumn 2021\, States of Mind will be chairing a regular Education Futures roundtable\, with the aim of drawing together practitioners with the knowledge\, skills and experience to co-create an alternative future for education. Please join us for the July conference and take part in this movement.

SUMMARY:Education Futures in Action: Changemakers
