SUMMARY:NFCDS annual lecture: Disabled people and climate change
DESCRIPTION:Climate change poses major risks to human health and livelihoods\, in ways that are compounding and creating new forms of health inequality. Disabled people – including 15% of the global population – are disproportionately exposed to these risks\, experiencing higher injury and death rates and fewer opportunities to influence climate policy or action. By homogenising disabled people as climate ‘victims’\, current efforts to tackle these inequalities largely fail to address the social\, cultural and political conditions that exacerbate such risks. The first presentation will reflect on how disability has been positioned within climate change scholarship to-date\, before considering opportunities to harness climate action to create more inclusive\, liveable places where disabled people can thrive and flourish in our ever-changing world. The second presentation will outline how Bristol is including disabled people in climate change discussions\, and how the city is taking measures to address the climate emergency\, particularly in relation to disabled people.

SUMMARY:Common challenges in Thematic Analysis and how to avoid them with Virginia Braun & Victoria Clarke
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke will explore common challenges in thematic analysis (TA) research\, how to avoid them – and even how to rework your analysis if necessary. \nWith a Q&A hosted by fellow academics Nikki Hayfield and Gareth Terry\, this webinar will focus on Braun & Clarke’s reflexive TA approach\, but also consider the wider TA family of methods. You will get a chance to ask Ginny and Victoria about common research hurdles such as confusing themes and topic summaries\, “mashing up” incompatible approaches to TA and treating TA as a theory-free method.

The group is split into three sessions (dates below). The main session is the initial 2hr workshop\, led by Dr Fi Coley\, followed by two optional group coaching sessions: you can come to either of both of these – totally up to you. (I appreciate that you might want a holiday\, which is also super important for recharging our batteries.) \nThe idea is that group accountability and support can boost our success in achieving our goals – plus I love hearing how people are getting on\, celebrating successes and breaking down barriers\, as well as giving that extra bit of ‘rocket fuel’ when needed. \nThe sessions\nInitial workshop (2hr) – Friday 29th July @ 9:30-11:30am\nGroup coaching session (1.5hr) – Friday 12th August  @ 12-1:30pm\nGroup coaching session (1.5hr) – Friday 26th August @ 12-1:30pm \nAll sessions attended can be logged as CPD hours (up to 5 hours in total). Flat rate fee of only £130 to access as many of the three online sessions as you like: opt in and out of the group coaching however suits you. \nContact details\nEnquires to: fi@theedpsychcoach.com\nwww.theedpsychcoach.com\ntwitter: @fiona_coley

SUMMARY:Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) Conference
DESCRIPTION:This conference showcases research undertaken by Educational Psychologists and trainee Educational Psychologists in educational contexts using Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as an analytical and theoretical framework. \nTopics include: \n\nEducational Psychologists research practice\nCare-experienced children\nEducational Psychologists service delivery to schools\nHow Trainee Educational Psychologists learn at university and on placement\nDecision-making for specialist school placements.\n\nAn open discussion/Q&A session will follow the presentations and abstracts are available on the eventbrite page. \nCultural-historical activity theory\nCHAT-informed approaches are now being used increasingly in educational contexts from early years through to higher education focusing upon learning\, change and development at both the individual and systemic levels (Edwards\, 2017; Hedegaard & Edwards\, 2019; Leadbetter\, 2017; Gedera & Williams\, 2016). Viewed through a CHAT lens\, the educational contexts within which Trainee Educational Psychologists learn\, and Educational Psychologists work\, can be viewed as interacting activity systems (Leadbetter\, 2017). \nThis complex landscape can be characterised as having tensions and contradictions within and across children’s services as professionals work collaboratively to support children and families. Tensions occur around professional roles\, tools and resources used\, and the policy/practice/ethical frameworks that underpin professional activity. CHAT conceptual and analytical tools are useful to gain insight into how professionals understand and have a shared purpose or object of their collaborative practice\, the actions undertaken and with whom\, and the tools used to achieve this purpose.
