SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - The Applied Trauma Responsive Classroom Model (ATRCM) with Dr Jemma Carter
DESCRIPTION:During this webinar I will be introducing and discussing the ATRCM. This model was created with the intention to operationalise some of the theory of trauma-informed practice for schools and education settings. I will explore the creation of the model\, as well as consider the practical applications for practice. I hope that it will provide a way of considering trauma-informed practise which is easily accessible\, easy to apply and adaptable for different settings. \nJemma has already written two blogs about ATRCM for edpsy: \n\nCreating a Trauma Sensitive Classroom\nUsing the Applied Trauma Responsive Classroom Observation Schedule\n\nBook on to this webinar

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - The climate emergency and educational psychology with Dr Dan O'Hare
DESCRIPTION:Overview: Climate breakdown is having a range of effects on children and young people\, at home and abroad. It is not an understatement to suggest that perhaps the most severe and enduring macrosystemic influence on children’s development now\, and in to the future\, will be the state of the planet’s climate\, our vulnerability as a species to the effects of climate breakdown\, and our ability to adapt or remain resilient to these changes. \nOur role cannot only be about responding to difficulties that individual children may have around\, ‘eco-anxiety’\, we also need to consider the impact of our profession and responding accordingly. If we are to seriously tackle the climate emergency\, and safeguard children’s futures\, as a profession we must be bold and begin to enact real change. \nDrawing on the 2022 discussion paper authored by Dan ‘The climate crisis\, children\, young people and educational psychology’ this webinar will: \n\nProvide a broad overview of the research exploring the impact of climate breakdown on children\nExplore children’s views on climate change\nProvide a call to action for EPs and the profession to engage properly and fully with this issue\n\nRegister for this webinar\n

SUMMARY:How to motivate children to enjoy reading using Self-Determination Theory
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that developing children’s reading abilities is hugely important in promoting educational achievements\, and that reading skills are a strong predictor towards outcomes later in life. However\, in 2023 The National Literacy Trust recorded the lowest levels of reading enjoyment since they started asking children and young people about this back in 2005. \nWith just 2 in 5 (43.4%) children and young people aged 8 to 18 reporting that they enjoyed reading in their free time\, this must act as a wake-up call for all those who support children and young people’s reading development. We need to have a conversation about how we motivate children to engage in reading. \nIn this session\, Principal Educational Psychologist Dr David Lamb will talk to you about different types of motivation and how adopting a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) perspective when supporting reading development can enable intrinsic motivation to flourish.\nDavid will also provide guidance on an effective reading strategy drawing upon SDT principles that adults can easily implement when helping children to read. \nThis session is suitable for anyone who wants to support children to read for pleasure whether this is at home or within the educational settings they work.

SUMMARY:Empowering educational journeys: academic self-concept\, hope\, and tertiary education engagement among emerging adults exposed to varied childhood experiences with Dr Keith Houghton
DESCRIPTION:EP Reach-Out are very excited to welcome back Dr Keith Houghton. \nThis doctoral thesis explores the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) on Academic Self-Concept (ASC) and Hope\, particularly focusing on their influence on tertiary education engagement among emerging adults. Through a two-phase\, sequential explanatory mixed-method study\, The research examines both the quantitative relationships between childhood experiences and levels of ASC and Hope and the qualitative mechanisms that allow individuals to maintain Higher ASC and Hope levels despite varied childhoods. \nThe research contributes valuable insights into how educational psychologists can better support young people with diverse backgrounds\, fostering more effective engagement and personal growth in tertiary education.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - *Book Launch* Excluded from School: Complex Discourses and Psychological Perspectives with the authors
DESCRIPTION:Children are still being excluded from school and the use of separation from school has been an intervention adopted over centuries in many different contexts. \nExcluded from School is a book describing the incredibly complex lives of the students and their families who have been through the exclusion process. It sets out the accounts from the children\, their families\, the teachers who excluded and the staff who received these students. It first appeared in 2009 and this new edition goes further in including perspectives from critical race theory\, working in Pupil Referral Units and information on the lives of those excluded after the exclusion. \nThe original volume was a collaboration between two educational psychologists and two clinical psychologists. This new edition adds to this with three educational psychologists. \nA recent BBC Radio 4 programme featured a detailed interview with a man who had been excluded from school. He said that the original book was one that he valued and one of the few that he allowed on his limited bookshelf space. \nWe hope that this book will be read by teachers and parents of children at risk of exclusion and will be found on the shelves of all secondary school staff rooms as well as those in PRUs. Educational Psychology and behaviour support services are likely to find this of interest and of use in professional development. \nThe launch is kindly being hosted by the Educational Psychology Reach-Out team and will include the contributors talking about their experiences working in this field.

SUMMARY:Using the applied trauma responsive classroom model (ATRCM) in supporting education settings
DESCRIPTION:edpsy hosts: Dr Jemma Carter\, Senior Educational Psychologist – Suffolk County Council\nCPD overview\nThe applied trauma responsive classroom model (ATRCM) was developed considering the trauma and resilience literature\, the experiences of local authority educational psychologists\, and a desire to empower education settings to deliver the support that the evidence suggests will make a difference. SUMMARY:edpsy hosts Dr Mary Stanley-Duke: Mediating learning - supporting children to get the most from every learning task
DESCRIPTION:CPD Overview\nEnhancing a child or young person’s experience of learning can be challenging. It can be difficult to know when to intervene and how to do so in a way that supports and develops the child’s learning and not just completing the task. \n‘Mediating learning’ describes the interaction between an adult and a learner when learning. During this interaction the adult intends to improve the thinking and learning potential of the child or young person (the learner). Mediating is about adjusting this interaction to maximise the chance of the learner using and applying their thinking skills both in the moment and in future learning situations. Mediating often also involves adjusting the learning task to support the learner’s engagement. \nThis webinar will share the psychology of mediating in an accessible manner. You will leave with an understanding of mediating and practical ideas that you can use when wanting to develop learning skills with a child or young person. \nLearning outcomes\nBy the end of this webinar you will; \n\nBe more familiar with the psychology of mediating learning\nKnow the importance and purpose of mediating learning\nKnow how to create an effective mediating learning interaction\nFeel confident in fostering learning skill development with the children and young people you interact with\n\nBooking and discounts\n \n\n  \nGroup booking discount of 20%\nIdeal for services and groups of professionals\, benefit from a 20% discount when 5 or more places are booked at the same time. \nUse promo code ‘EDPSYGROUP20‘ \nTEPs and students\nTrainee EPs\, trainee psychologists and students can benefit from a 40% discount. \nTo benefit from this you must: \n\nRegister for the event using your university email address\nUse promo code ‘EDPSYTEP40‘\n\nIf you do not use your university email address to book\, we may ask you to confirm that you are a trainee/student \nDr Mary Stanley-Duke\n \nMary trained as a primary teacher before becoming an educational psychologist (EP) in 2006.
