SUMMARY:Undergraduates’ Experiences of Bereavement by Suicide with Lauren Stothard
DESCRIPTION:Grief following a suicide is qualitatively different to grief following non-suicidal deaths\, and this webinar will explore the lived experiences of individuals bereaved by suicide. As part of a postgraduate project\, a qualitative study was conducted with twenty-two individuals who lost a loved one to suicide whilst studying as an undergraduate. A thematic analysis identified commonalities among these individuals’ experiences\, which will be shared in this webinar. \nWhilst the participants were undergraduates at the time of their loved one’s suicide\, their experiences reflect that of those grieved by suicide more generally. Therefore\, this webinar would be useful for anyone working with individuals affected by suicide\, and suggestions for supporting these ‘suicide survivors’ will be made. \nPlease note that although this is an important area of research\, it is a highly sensitive and emotive topic\, and therefore may not be suitable for everyone. \nIf you are experiencing difficulties with your mental health please talk to someone. \n\nCall the Samaritans on 116 123\nContact the Papyrus HopelineUK\n\nCall: 0800 068 4141\nText: 07860039967\nEmail: pat@papyrus-uk.org\n\n\n\nOpening hours: 9am – midnight every day of the year (Weekends and Bank Holidays included)

SUMMARY:Watch and Wonder - a way of being curious that supports children and young peoples' emotional development with Michele Crooks
DESCRIPTION:This webinar provides an overview of an experiential\, relational way of helping children develop emotional language\, understand their emotions\, relate to one another better and become more self-aware. \nDan Hughes\, ‘Watch and Wonder’s’ Patron says: \n‘Watch & Wonder’ simply and clearly presents to a child the core aspects of human relationships\, the fundamental qualities in which a human being learns how to relate to other human beings. It’s fundamental to what it means to be a human being in a good relationship. It’s actually what I do in therapy with children who have been traumatised in relationships and what I help them to learn\, that children can take advantage of good relationships with good people. \n‘Watch and Wonder’ provides this learning and more\, for a whole class. It’s a real intuitive\, experiential understanding of relationships\, that builds from the inside out through gentle reflecting\, noticing\, commenting and through questions. \nRecent Trainee said:\n“Thank you for an inspirational course. It very much dovetails with and builds upon my Trauma Informed Schools training and I’d see it as complementary to it – I can use my Trauma Informed Schools skills within the Watch and Wonder context.“

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out presents: Introducing the Resilience Ball Framework with Dr Cath Lowther
DESCRIPTION:The wellbeing of our young people is front and foremost in our minds at the moment. There has been a lot of discussion about their mental health in the media in relation to COVID\, and more recently in relation to the war in Ukraine. Unfortunately these conversations often tend to focus on mental distress\, which raises the question: is it appropriate to frame our reactions to events like a global pandemic and military conflict within a psychiatric narrative? \nPerhaps alternative narratives of hope and resilience are more relevant. This webinar will explore the concept of resilience as an ‘ordinary magic’ (Masten\, 2001\, 2014) and a contextually located attribute. It will also ask how educational psychologists can challenge current narratives regarding the human response to adversity. As @WillPsyc shared: ‘What matters to resilience is a sense of hope that life does indeed make sense\, despite chaos\, brutality\, stress\, worry or despair’ (Panter-Brick\, 2014). \n@ResilienceBall

SUMMARY:‘It just helps head off things before they become bigger’: Setting up and running EP drop-in sessions with a small group of schools with Dr Dan O'Hare
DESCRIPTION:In this EP Reach-Out Webinar Dan will share his work establishing EP drop-in sessions with three schools. The schools wanted to provide staff with the opportunity to talk with the EP more frequently and Dan will discuss the preparatory work that occurred to support these schools to pool their resources and establish a cooperative and collaborative EP drop-in session model\, within a traded context. \nWe’ll explore the psychology underpinning the model of delivery\, the pragmatics of establishing this approach\, and look at evaluative data from 20 drop-in sessions. The hope is that you’ll leave the webinar fairly confident to take a similar approach in to practice. \nRegister for this webinar

SUMMARY:It's not home schooling: what every psychologist should know about elective home education
DESCRIPTION:edpsy hosts: Dr Naomi Fisher\, Clinical Psychologist\nAbout the webinar\nDid you know that there is no such thing as ‘home schooling’ in the UK?  The legal term is ‘home education’ and that’s how most families refer to themselves. An increasing number of children in the UK are electively home educated. In many cases these children have a very different educational experience to school. Despite this\, most psychologists receive very little training on supporting home education or working with home educating families. This leaves many families unable to access support for fear of encountering judgement and prejudice. Home isn’t about reproducing school round the dining room table. \nMyths abound\, all of which can form barriers between home educating families and professionals. \nThis webinar will address commonly asked questions\, including: \n\nlegality\nsafeguarding\nspecial educational needs\nsocialisation\nthe National Curriculum\n\nYou will leave understanding of: \n\nhow home education is different to school\nwhy home educated children won’t necessarily present like schooled children\nthe pathways families take into home education\na better idea of how psychologists can engage with home educating families.\n\nYou will receive a certificate of attendance after the webinar \nAbout Naomi\nDr Naomi Fisher is a clinical psychologist and author of Changing Our Minds: How Children Can Take Control of Their Own Learning. She has two children who have never been to conventional school and has over ten years’ experience in the home education community. She works with young people and families where children are having difficulty in school as well as with home educating families. \nNaomi has written several articles discussing home education \nSchools out – the arguments for self-directed education \nWe seem to have this difficulty imagining viable educational alternatives

SUMMARY:Education\, emotional wellbeing and the pandemic: Time to reflect\, acknowledge and recalibrate with Dr Maddi Popoola\, Dr Sarah Wendland & Dr Sarah Sivers
DESCRIPTION:We feel it is important to take some time to look back and reflect over the past few years and make sense of what has happened as a result of the pandemic. The significant impact COVID-19 has had on children and young people’s development\, emotional wellbeing and education needs to be acknowledged in order for the right plans and support to be put in place. We draw upon the Pupil Views research we conducted during the pandemic and share thoughts about ways to use psychological thinking and trauma-informed approaches to recalibrate and look forward with hope. \nRegister for this webinar

SUMMARY:Common challenges in Thematic Analysis and how to avoid them with Virginia Braun & Victoria Clarke
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke will explore common challenges in thematic analysis (TA) research\, how to avoid them – and even how to rework your analysis if necessary. \nWith a Q&A hosted by fellow academics Nikki Hayfield and Gareth Terry\, this webinar will focus on Braun & Clarke’s reflexive TA approach\, but also consider the wider TA family of methods. You will get a chance to ask Ginny and Victoria about common research hurdles such as confusing themes and topic summaries\, “mashing up” incompatible approaches to TA and treating TA as a theory-free method.
