SUMMARY:Compassionate co-regulation to reduce anxiety in children\, young people and adults with Jyoti Manuel
DESCRIPTION:As care-givers we underestimate the impact and importance of our state of being for the children and young people around us\, whether we are an educator\, parent or therapist. We are so busy trying to make everything right for them\, often creating a hugely anxious state in ourselves trying to control the impossible. However when we are calm and regulated there is an unspoken communication circle of safety and care. From there everyone can thrive. \n

SUMMARY:How are parenting practices associated with bullying in adolescents?
DESCRIPTION:ACAMH’s vision is to be ‘sharing best evidence\, improving practice’\, to this end in December 2020 we launched ‘CAMHS around the Campfire’\, a free monthly virtual journal club\, run in conjunction with André Tomlin. \nEach 1-hour meeting features a new piece of research\, which we discuss in an informal journal club session. The focus is on critical appraisal of the research and implications for practice. Primarily targeted at CAMHS practitioners\, and researchers\, ‘CAMHS around the Campfire’ will be publicly accessible\, free to attend\, and relevant to a wider audience. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor this session we are pleased to welcome Dr. Ana Pascual-Sanchez\, Faculty of Medicine\, Department of Brain Sciences\, Imperial College London\,to discuss her CAMH paper ‘How are parenting practices associated with bullying in adolescents? A cross-sectional study’. \n\n \n\n\n\n\nA panel\, comprising paper author Dr. Ana Pascual-Sanchez\, Imperial College London\, Associate Professor of Experimental Psychology Lucy Bowes\, University Oxford\, and a lived experience perspective from the McPin Foundation\, will discuss the research and its implications with information scientist Douglas Badenoch. This discussion will be facilitated by Andre Tomlin (@Mental_Elf).

SUMMARY:‘Beyond the Medical’- The school experiences of young people with a chronic health condition with Dr Sarah Lakeman
DESCRIPTION:Following on from Lauren Baggley and Erika Payne’s research presentations which also explore the impact of attending school with a chronic health condition\, Sarah Lakeman (a newly qualified EP) presents her thesis research\, an IPA study which explores the school experiences of five young people with a chronic health condition. Sarah will explore the key themes arising from the research\, which extend beyond the purely ‘medical’. She will then describe how the themes were linked to Self Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci\, 2017) to the create a reflective framework which demonstrates how the three basic psychological needs; autonomy\, relatedness and competence were met or frustrated for the young people in the study. Finally she will consider how this framework could be further developed to help school staff gain a greater awareness of the broader psychosocial impacts of having a chronic health condition at school\, promote person-centred planning and support the development of holistic and bespoke support for this cohort of young people.

SUMMARY:The retrospective experiences of young adults who had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME) in secondary school: An IPA study with Dr Charlotte Davies
DESCRIPTION:CFS/ME is an illness with a range of symptoms\, however a core feature is fatigue after physical or mental exertion. CFS/ME is thought to impact up to 2% of secondary school children. However\, little research exists into the experience of secondary education with the condition. My research was an exploratory study to address this research gap. I interviewed young adults about their time at secondary school with a diagnosis of CFS/ME and analysed the interviews using IPA. I will share reflections on my findings\, including possible facilitators and barriers to education with CFS/ME\, and how these can be supported. This is part of an ongoing series of health-based webinars.

SUMMARY:The Psychologically Flexible School: A Whole Community Approach to Wellbeing in Education with Dr. Duncan Gillard
DESCRIPTION:This 30 minute webinar explores the value of a whole-school approach to wellbeing\, describing one example of a framework for enabling such a systems-wide approach. The session explores the various ways in which the term wellbeing can be defined\, making the case that a clearly explicated and workable definition of wellbeing is essential if we are to make meaningful progress toward improved mental health and wellbeing for a school community. We will then explore the conception of wellbeing adopted by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and allied models\, which emphases connection with personal value\, values-based action and flexibly and openly relating to our inner world – to our thoughts\, emotions and sensations. Finally\, the session outlines a wide range of ways in which approaches based on Psychological Flexibility can be applied to promote and improve the wellbeing of children\, school staff and parents and to promote whole-school community cohesion and belongingness. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Equity in Education for children with medical needs with Stephen Lowe (Headteacher Oxfordshire Hospital School)
DESCRIPTION:The barriers are not in the abilities of our pupils\, but in the disparate opportunities they are afforded by the impact of their medical condition. Pupils with medical conditions are likely to be victims of an education opportunity gap which is unfair and far from inclusive. Pupils who miss the most education require more support and resources than their peers to succeed. This webinar offers professionals practical solutions. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Therapeutic work with children and young people suffering child sexual abuse and exploitation
DESCRIPTION:Cost plus VAT. \nThis Masterclass programme\, facilitated by Dr Arnon Bentovim and Carol Jolliffe\, will help practitioners working in social care\, health\, education and youth justice to deliver effective therapeutic work with children subject to sexual abuse and exploitation. The approach recognises that sexual abuse and exploitation occur in a context of significant adversity\, and is based in Trauma Informed Practice which recognises common responses to adversity in childhood are traumatic\, and such responses in association with a variety of social\, psychological and genetic influences can trigger an extensive set of complex overlapping physical\, behavioural and mental health responses. Trauma-Informed Practice TIP advocates that services should recognise the traumatic base of the problems presented to them and adapt their practice to encompass this understanding. The Hope for Children and Families Intervention Resources are a set of step-by-step guides\, focusing on relevant themes\, including Working with Child Sexual Abuse and Addressing Emotional and Traumatic Responses. Each module includes guidance notes\, scripts\, activities\, and worksheets that can be organised into a customised treatment menu for each child or young person. They are designed to help practitioners from all types of services\, training and levels of experience. \n20% discount available quoting hcuk20edpsy

SUMMARY:Is social media actually bad for adolescent mental health?
DESCRIPTION:Society members: £58.20 \nThis webinar unpacks the complex relationship between social media use and adolescent mental health. \nSocial media has long been blamed for causing a crisis in adolescent mental health. But this is an oversimplification\, and the scientific evidence indicates a far more nuanced picture of this relationship. \nThis webinar aims to provide clarity on this topic\, covering the latest findings from psychological research. The webinar is relevant for anyone working with adolescents\, particularly in educational and clinical settings\, and will provide attendees with a more accurate – and more hopeful – understanding of the role social media plays in young people’s lives.

SUMMARY:Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) Conference
DESCRIPTION:This conference showcases research undertaken by Educational Psychologists and trainee Educational Psychologists in educational contexts using Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as an analytical and theoretical framework. \nTopics include: \n\nEducational Psychologists research practice\nCare-experienced children\nEducational Psychologists service delivery to schools\nHow Trainee Educational Psychologists learn at university and on placement\nDecision-making for specialist school placements.\n\nAn open discussion/Q&A session will follow the presentations and abstracts are available on the eventbrite page. \nCultural-historical activity theory\nCHAT-informed approaches are now being used increasingly in educational contexts from early years through to higher education focusing upon learning\, change and development at both the individual and systemic levels (Edwards\, 2017; Hedegaard & Edwards\, 2019; Leadbetter\, 2017; Gedera & Williams\, 2016). Viewed through a CHAT lens\, the educational contexts within which Trainee Educational Psychologists learn\, and Educational Psychologists work\, can be viewed as interacting activity systems (Leadbetter\, 2017). \nThis complex landscape can be characterised as having tensions and contradictions within and across children’s services as professionals work collaboratively to support children and families. Tensions occur around professional roles\, tools and resources used\, and the policy/practice/ethical frameworks that underpin professional activity. CHAT conceptual and analytical tools are useful to gain insight into how professionals understand and have a shared purpose or object of their collaborative practice\, the actions undertaken and with whom\, and the tools used to achieve this purpose.

SUMMARY:Undergraduates’ Experiences of Bereavement by Suicide with Lauren Stothard
DESCRIPTION:Grief following a suicide is qualitatively different to grief following non-suicidal deaths\, and this webinar will explore the lived experiences of individuals bereaved by suicide. As part of a postgraduate project\, a qualitative study was conducted with twenty-two individuals who lost a loved one to suicide whilst studying as an undergraduate. A thematic analysis identified commonalities among these individuals’ experiences\, which will be shared in this webinar. \nWhilst the participants were undergraduates at the time of their loved one’s suicide\, their experiences reflect that of those grieved by suicide more generally. Therefore\, this webinar would be useful for anyone working with individuals affected by suicide\, and suggestions for supporting these ‘suicide survivors’ will be made. \nPlease note that although this is an important area of research\, it is a highly sensitive and emotive topic\, and therefore may not be suitable for everyone. \nIf you are experiencing difficulties with your mental health please talk to someone. \n\nCall the Samaritans on 116 123\nContact the Papyrus HopelineUK\n\nCall: 0800 068 4141\nText: 07860039967\nEmail: pat@papyrus-uk.org\n\n\n\nOpening hours: 9am – midnight every day of the year (Weekends and Bank Holidays included)

SUMMARY:Watch and Wonder - a way of being curious that supports children and young peoples' emotional development with Michele Crooks
DESCRIPTION:This webinar provides an overview of an experiential\, relational way of helping children develop emotional language\, understand their emotions\, relate to one another better and become more self-aware. \nDan Hughes\, ‘Watch and Wonder’s’ Patron says: \n‘Watch & Wonder’ simply and clearly presents to a child the core aspects of human relationships\, the fundamental qualities in which a human being learns how to relate to other human beings. It’s fundamental to what it means to be a human being in a good relationship. It’s actually what I do in therapy with children who have been traumatised in relationships and what I help them to learn\, that children can take advantage of good relationships with good people. \n‘Watch and Wonder’ provides this learning and more\, for a whole class. It’s a real intuitive\, experiential understanding of relationships\, that builds from the inside out through gentle reflecting\, noticing\, commenting and through questions. \nRecent Trainee said:\n“Thank you for an inspirational course. It very much dovetails with and builds upon my Trauma Informed Schools training and I’d see it as complementary to it – I can use my Trauma Informed Schools skills within the Watch and Wonder context.“
