SUMMARY:Selective mutism workshop with Maggie Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Maggie Johnson is a specialist Speech & Language Therapist who is widely regarded as being one of the UK’s leading experts in selective mutism. \nWith an average of two children in every primary school having selective mutism (i.e. selectively silent)\, and recognising how important early assessment and intervention is for the outcomes for these children\, Educational Psychologists have an important role in supporting schools to identify and meet these needs. After all\, left unsupported\, selective mutism can have a significant impact upon a child’s social\, academic\, and emotional development\, and lead to greater mental health difficulties within adolescence and adulthood. \nThe sessions will be delivered through 2 x 3 hour webinars (05-06/11/20). In conjunction with the resource materials below\, we will develop our:\no	Psychological understanding of selective mutism;\no	Knowledge of tools to assess selective mutism;\no	Use of interventions for school aged children. \nOn this course\, we will explore the nature and causes of selective mutism\, differential diagnosis\, theoretical frameworks and evidence-based intervention strategies. These will leave us with the skills and confidence in how to best support schools\, families and children. \nThe workshops will be delivered through 2 x 3.25 hour interactive webinars. \nThe resource manual for this course is the Speechmark publication ‘The Selective Mutism Resource Manual’ second edition (2016) which participants are highly encouraged to purchase prior to the course. We have a 20% discount code (BSE20) which can be used at the Routledge website. Alternatively click here to purchase through Amazon.

SUMMARY:Digital transitions for autistic children: Learning from lockdown for the future
DESCRIPTION:The Autism Community Research Network @Southampton (ACoRNS) is a public engagement project that has developed a research-practice partnership between Education and Psychology at the University of Southampton\, school leaders and practitioners in the local community. Together they have established a co-constructed network for researching evidence-based practices in autism education\, with the views and perspectives of children and young people at its centre. \nThis online event for 2020 will be an opportunity to share the important and innovative research that has been done with Digital Stories during lockdown to support the assessments of children for their EHCPs\, and the transitions of older students with complex needs beyond school. This free webinar will be a chance to share examples\, learning\, and tips from co-produced research on supporting transitions for autistic children during lockdown using digital tools; it is chaired by Professor Sarah Parsons.

SUMMARY:How to have a respectful conversation about race - featuring Marsha Douglas
DESCRIPTION:In this course we deepen participants understanding of systemic racism and the spectrum of privilege. It challenges the participants to examine their behaviours and take close looks at some of the views they have held since a very young age\, e.g. this area is a “bad” area\, because it has a high proportion of black/brown people living in it\, or that young black men in tracksuits are “thugs”. We think about where these messages come from and how people are indoctrinated by the media. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will: \n\nConfront their own racism and unconscious biases\nBecome aware of the ways they treat people differently based on race\nThink about practical changes they can make in their workplaces
