SUMMARY:Unconscious bias: Exploring race\, identity and discrimination in education
DESCRIPTION:Not to be missed – Jeffrey Boakye\, author of Hold Tight: Black Masculinity\, Millennials\, and the Meaning of Grime and Black\, Listed: Black British Culture Explored\, joins us for a powerful and frank exploration of unconscious bias in education. \nUsing a mixture of analogy and real life experiences as both student and teacher\, Jeffrey walks us through a brief history of racism\, how that is still playing out in our education system and most importantly\, what you can do about it. \nThis session will challenge you and inspire you to do more to address the unconscious bias in our education system\, our communities and our institutions. \n“It’s not enough for adults to be not racist. We need to lean into anti-racism\, and every school needs to become a site of this anti-racist work.” Jeffrey Boakye \nJeffrey creates an open forum to discuss and learn without judgement.

SUMMARY:The narrative around exclusions: Views from parents of children with autism with Jamie Allen\, Kara Pirttijarvi and Daniel Acheampong
DESCRIPTION:We\, as Trainee Educational Psychologists\, conducted a small-scale group research project in a London Borough during our first year placement. We explored the narrative surrounding exclusions from parents who have children with autism. We will share some of our findings from this research to highlight the impact exclusions can have on the young person and their families.

SUMMARY:Children's right to play in schools
DESCRIPTION:There is growing interest amongst educational psychologists in promoting children’s right to play in schools. The British Psychological Society’s Division of Educational and Child Psychology position statement\, published in summer 2019\, asked its members to promote children’s right to play within their work with schools and teachers. \nThe impetus for this statement came from research undertaken by trainee educational psychologists completing a three-year doctoral programme at the University of Manchester. The programme continues to support right to play research. \nPlay Wales is hosting this seminar to showcase some of this research\, considering implications for practice.
