SUMMARY:Relational classrooms – A whole-school neuro-developmental and trauma informed approach to education
DESCRIPTION:This 7-day course takes relevant concepts from neurodevelopmental research and attachment theory\, brings them into the classroom\, and empowers school staff to apply this knowledge to the teaching and learning process\, promoting the inclusion of all children. \nDuring the course we explore the work of Dr Bruce D. Perry\, Kim Golding\, Karen Treisman\, Dan Hughes\, Stephen Porges (and more) and demonstrate how it can be applied in the practical integration of a relational approach in schools. \nReflection is actively encouraged in each session as we work towards developing a whole-school action plan\, or if working directly with children\, an individual relational support plan. \nIt is aimed at all school staff\, whether working directly with children\, or working strategically and systemically.

They develop in the wake of common infections (such as Covid-19\, chicken pox\, influenza\, or strep A in PANDAS cases)\, when the infection subsequently causes a misdirected immune and/or neuroinflammatory response. PANS and PANDAS diagnoses are on the rise thanks to recent progress in the medical field. \nBoth PANS and PANDAS have been recognised as discrete diseases by the NHS. Multi-disciplinary professionals are currently working nationally to advance clinical care\, and to raise awareness across the board of education\, social care and health professionals. Both PANS and PANDAS can have a crippling impact on a child or young person’s education\, due both to the often-sudden onset and the wide range of areas they can affect. \nUnlike other conditions that show gradual signs\, these conditions can cause abrupt and severe unexpected learning difficulties. Limited awareness amongst professionals\, coupled with symptom overlap with Autism\, ADHD\, and anxiety disorders for example is causing low levels of wellbeing and poor educational outcomes for children and young people living with these conditions. \nGillian Mathewson\nGillian Mathewson is the PANS PANDAS UK Teacher Trainer and Representative for Scotland. She is a registered teacher\, and was formerly a Principal Teacher of Mathematics. She is also a parent with lived experience.\n \n

SUMMARY:Executive Functions: Connecting into Practice - online course for Educational Psychologists
DESCRIPTION:This online self-paced course will guide you through the layers of understanding the concept of executive functions\, how we assess those skills and bring it together in a formulation that makes sense. \nThe course lead Dr Rebecca Ashton is an experienced educational psychologist working in neuropsychology. She has a wealth of experience working with executive functioning issues in school casework and is excited to be sharing her knowledge and understanding in this area. \nThe course is in an eLearning format which can be taken at your own pace (does not need to be competed on the above date)\, and used as a reference guide to come back to over time. It also includes a host of useful resources which can be utilised in your practice\, reflective activities to facilitate your learning\, and a space for the EP community to ask questions and share thoughts between us. \n‘Great guide to assessment\, formulation and sharing understanding with others\, as well as strategies for intervention at differing levels\, and delivered by experts in their fields’ – Review by Kate L\, Ed Psych \n‘A course that develops EPs knowledge and understanding of EF’s but also how to translate and use this for effective interventions at individual child\, parent\, whole class and systemic levels. Not to forget becoming more aware of my own EF strengths and weaknesses. Thank you! – Review by Joanne W\, Ed Psych

There will be opportunities to try out new skills with supportive coaching in a safe and nurturing environment and a full exploration of your ‘What If?’ questions\n\nThe training will be run by Colin Newton and Derek Wilson whose work on Inclusion\, Person Centred Planning\, Creating Circles of Friends and Circle of Adults is internationally valued. You can opt to attend for Day 1 only or attend for both days \nFor those attending for both days\, Colin and Derek are happy to offer email support and coaching over time to individuals as they begin to facilitate PATHs in the course of their work. SUMMARY:REACH Train the Trainer course
DESCRIPTION:This course is specifically a ‘train the trainer’ course for Educational Psychologists who would like to deliver the REACH course in their area. Once EPs have attended the six modules of this REACH training course\, all materials are then freely available to enable course delivery in their area. Six modules over six days: 3/8/21; 4/8/21; 10/8/21; 11/8/21; 31/8/21; 1/9/21 \nThe REACH Course is an educational psychologist developed and led learning curriculum\, equipping practitioners with the psychological knowledge and skills they require to embed effective trauma informed\, resiliency enabling approaches in their schools and settings. \nDelivered in six ‘bite-size’ modules\, REACH teaches 100 different learning objectives relating to the key knowledge and skills needed to develop an awareness not only of adversity and trauma\, but also of the approaches that are vital in supporting young people to do well\, despite their risk factors. \nIn particular\, the course explores the five ‘Roots of Resilience’ – and numerous associated research-based protective factors – that we can help vulnerable children to tap into\, in order to maintain their strength and stability during adverse events\, nourishing them from the inside out. \nThese protective factors are ‘positive childhood experiences’ (PCEs) that can mitigate the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and foster the resilience of children affected by adversity. The course also teaches simple trauma informed techniques for addressing the often-hidden effects of trauma and toxic stress. \nBecause we know that stable and supportive relationships are the golden thread – or ‘ordinary magic’ (Masten\, 2001) – running through research into what buffers us from risk\, there is a strong emphasis on the importance of nurturing and attuned relationships for resilience in the REACH training course. The course also emphasises the importance of developing a strong sense of self.
