SUMMARY:“Race” and Culture – Belonging within Educational Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Training and working as an Educational Psychologist (EP) is a challenging journey. In addition to academic and work demands\, Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals may face an additional challenge of trying to fit in with others with the service or the course. A sense of belonging to the EP team or training course is important for the mental health and wellbeing of the TEP/EP. There are a number of different factors that may influence the sense of belonging for a trainee or an EP. One aspect is their relationship with their supervisor and the supervisee-supervisor relationship. \nThe aim of this session would be to consider the impact of supervisory relationship experiences of TEPs and EPs from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Communities. This may include discussions on: \nDeveloping and understanding of how BAME TEPs/EPs see themselves.  \nReflecting on what is impact for Educational Psychologists in supervision.  \nUnderstanding Educational Psychologist cultural identity and self-reflection. \nConsidering the ways forward in making supervision culturally responsive. \nRoom 206 (2nd Floor)

SUMMARY:CRRES Model of Therapeutic Assessment regional training day
DESCRIPTION:An experiential skills development day learning a new creative approach for use in assessment with troubled children and young people who are unable to talk about their difficulties.  CRRES draws processes and activities from art and play therapy\, and blends them with the rigour and efficiency of EP assessment methodology\, to create a fascinating and effective means of enabling students with SEMH needs to participate fully in their assessment and intervention planning.  The process has a therapeutic impact in addition to information gathering for reporting purposes\, and has the capacity to promote significant positive shifts in the child’s support system.  Participants will leave the day equipped to apply the model in their work.

SUMMARY:The role of the psychologist in responding to youth suicide in schools
DESCRIPTION:£153 for BPS Members \nThis workshop will prepare psychologists to respond ethically and confidently using evidence-based strategies to a suicide death within a school setting. \nThe impact of a youth suicide on a school community can be immediate and traumatic. International research has identified a phenomenon known as suicide ‘contagion’\, where a person’s knowledge of (or exposure to) a suicide increases the likelihood of them viewing suicide as an option. In these circumstances schools need clear and practical information\, which they can rely on for guidance and direction\, to reduce this risk and support help-seeking behaviours among their student cohort. Psychologists working in schools are therefore in a prime position to provide this information and to guide and support the school following the death of a student (i.e. complete a suicide postvention response). The topics covered will include: \n \n\n\n\n\n\nLegal implications for school\nManaging social media\, memorials\, anniversaries and birthday\nManaging suicide attempt\nManaging a death that cannot be referred to as a ‘suicide’
