SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Autistic children and young people’s experiences of imaginary friends and imaginary worlds with Dr Kate Boyle
DESCRIPTION:Kate Boyle outlines her thesis research which explores autistic children and young people’s experiences with and perceptions of their imaginary companions (ICs) and paracosms (imaginary worlds). Kate undertook qualitative interviews with autistic individuals aged 7-17; the children and young people used their ICs and paracosms for a range of purposes including to meet their needs for connection and control\, to support their well-being and to help them make sense of themselves and their learning. There is limited research about autistic children engaging in such imaginary activities\, due to the long-standing belief that autism is synonymous with imagination difficulties. This research challenges the imagination deficit discourse\, the theory of mind hypothesis and the theory of sustained imagination.

SUMMARY:Dan Hughes: The importance of relationship expectations in childhood – how they develop & how they change
DESCRIPTION:Cost plus VAT. \nA very special online opportunity to spend time learning directly from and with the wonderful Dan Hughes. This day is open to anyone working with and / or supporting children & young people – this includes parents & carers as well as professionals\, practitioners & volunteers. \nContent Summary: \nThe initial interactions with the important people in a child’s life\, cause the child to expect that similar interactions will occur in relationship to those people as well as people in general. \nWhen the child has been hurt in these early interactions\, the child’s brain quickly develops a bias toward protecting self through “fight\, flight\, or freeze” and often misses cues that this relationship willl create safety and opportunities for nurturing engagements. \nThese biases make it difficult to help the child to respond to and be influenced by caring and supportive interactions being provided by a new caregiver\, teacher\, or counsellor / therapist.  Routine frustrations and disappointments with these new adults are often experienced as being frightening\, harsh\, or even abusive. \nIn our efforts to assist these children in developing reciprocal positive relationships with others\, we need to keep in mind that the child’s response to us may be primarily determined by their expectations based on past abusive experiences. \nWe need to relate in ways that generate safety and an openness to new learning. \nWe need to perceive and respond to the child’s inner life rather than to the behaviours that are problems and symptoms secondary to trauma. \nWe need to discover who the child was before being traumatized\, who the child is underneath the traumatic symptoms. \nThese discoveries will help us to become engaged safely with the child and to invite him into relational experiences that generate new expectations of nurture\, comfort\, and joy. \nThis will be a rich\, fun and inspiring day with Dan that will include time for questions and discussion\, as well as the likelihood of some role play. Please note: Dan will be beaming in live from the East Coast of America – hence the timings of the workshop. We suggest you attend having already had lunch as there will only be two short breaks during the training in order to cover the equivalent of a full day’s content. \nAn uplifting\, informative and transformational day with an incredible trainer – not to be missed!

SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing Skills Club for EPs (MISC)
DESCRIPTION:MI Skills Club (MISC) is a free community group for Educational Psychologists wishing to practise their Motivational Interviewing skills. \nIf you have already undertaken some training in Motivational Interviewing (at least half a day)*\, you are welcome to join our MI Skills Club (MISC)\, which is a free community group for Educational Psychologists wishing to practise their MI skills within a small and friendly group. \nBecause MI is a conversational style\, rather than a discrete skill\, it is not something that can be mastered by attending a one-off training session. While MI is a learnable approach\, it takes practice\, reflection and supervision to improve. Learning MI on your own is hard\, and receiving objective feedback and expert feedback are helpful in developing and maintaining competence in MI (Miller & Rollnick\, 2023). \nCathy Atkinson and Fi Coley\, who are both members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)\, are collaborating to build an MI Learning Community for EPs. MINT (2019) defines a learning community as a network of practitioners interested in the same topic\, and the community can serve as both a resource and a forum for developing practice. \nIn each 90-minute online session we will focus on one small aspect of MI (micro-skills practice) and use breakout rooms with small groups to practice skills and give /receive supportive feedback. \nThis event is open to Educational Psychologists\, Trainee Educational Psychologists\, and Assistant Psychologists. We are unable to accommodate aspiring EPs at this event. \n*If you are just starting out on your MI journey\, or you would like to refresh your skills\, you can join our one-day Introduction and Refresher training on Friday 27th September 2024

DESCRIPTION:Hardly a day seems go by without some reference to the dire state of attendance in schools\, particularly since the pandemic. For EPs\, of course\, a significant part of our role relates to the needs of children and young people experiencing extended non-school attendance. This day will be the usual mixture of up-to-date research and how it informs practice. \nA detailed programme with more information about speakers and the titles of their contribution will be available from mid-February. The workshop will explore how DNA-V can be used at Tier 1 (universal)\, Tier 2 (targeted) and Tier 3 (specialist/individualised) levels to support youth wellbeing in simple\, practical\, fun and powerful ways. \nMore about the presenter: Dr Duncan Gillard is a HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) registered Psychologist and an experienced ACT & DNA-V practitioner and trainer.\nDuncan is the author of books including The Science of Children’s Wellbeing (2023) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Dummies (2016) and of a wide range of peer-reviewed articles and chapters on the subjects of ACT and Contextual Psychological Science.\nFor the last 18 months\, Duncan has been leading an NHS-England funded\, ACT-based psychology service called Enable Inclusion Team (EIT)\, which is a service for children\, young people\, families and schools where young people are at risk of permanent exclusion or presenting as anxious around school attendance.\nDuncan is the co-developer of the ACT-informed children’s wellbeing curriculum Connect PSHE\, which is currently the only children’s wellbeing curriculum in the U.K. to have been successfully subject to a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) yielding positive wellbeing outcomes for children.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Enhancing staff wellbeing: The pivotal role of educational psychologists in schools with Dr Carol Strahan
DESCRIPTION:The Teacher Wellbeing Index 2023 paints a concerning picture of the current state of wellbeing among education staff. One of the key contributing factors identified is the organisational culture within educational institutions\, highlighting the need for systemic changes to address these growing challenges. This session looks at the role educational psychologists can play in supporting schools to develop a culture that emphasises the importance of emotional wellbeing for all staff members. \nThe session will provide an overview of the EPS School Staff Wellbeing Project which was set up in the Educational Psychology Service in Northern Ireland. DESCRIPTION:Cost plus VAT. \nA brilliant new day with Karen that focuses on some of the less frequently explored areas of trauma : inter-\, trans-\, and multigenerational as well as inherited and historical trauma will all be considered. This day can be attended as a stand alone session or it can be paired with a second new day with Karen in October 2024 on Organisational Trauma. \nContent Summary: \nTrauma is an umbrella and broad term\, and we often focus in services around certain types of traumas; but the crucial area of intergenerational\, multigenerational\, transgenerational\, inherited\, and historical trauma is often less acknowledged or spoken about. \nThis day has a spotlight on intergenerational trauma at a collective\, community\, and society level such as within the context of genocide\, war\, and political oppression as well as exploring the concept and experience of intergenerational trauma within a family and parenting context. \nThis day is not focused on how to treat or intervene directly with intergenerational trauma (that is far beyond the breadth of a day and is multi layered with multiple different approaches which might be used) but rather intended to raise curiosity\, awareness\, understanding\, and knowledge as to what it is\, how it can show itself\, how it can be transferred\, some of the common patterns and themes\, and why it is important to consider. \nThis day will support attendees to increase their knowledge and awareness in this area and give them more confidence when discussing it with people as well as honouring and respecting its presence and legacy. There will also be an acknowledgment around some of the critiques around and limitations of the field of intergenerational trauma. \nWe will also share different terms and ways of describing intergenerational trauma. There will be some examples of interweaving this understanding into tools such as a cultural genogram. \nWe will also discuss some of the aspects of intergenerational hope\, wisdom\, and of community and collective care. \nDelivery Style: \nThere will be a combination of lecture style\, small group discussions\, analogies\, metaphors\, props\, and interactive exercises.
