SUMMARY:Empowering educational journeys: academic self-concept\, hope\, and tertiary education engagement among emerging adults exposed to varied childhood experiences with Dr Keith Houghton
DESCRIPTION:EP Reach-Out are very excited to welcome back Dr Keith Houghton. \nThis doctoral thesis explores the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) on Academic Self-Concept (ASC) and Hope\, particularly focusing on their influence on tertiary education engagement among emerging adults. Through a two-phase\, sequential explanatory mixed-method study\, The research examines both the quantitative relationships between childhood experiences and levels of ASC and Hope and the qualitative mechanisms that allow individuals to maintain Higher ASC and Hope levels despite varied childhoods. \nThe research contributes valuable insights into how educational psychologists can better support young people with diverse backgrounds\, fostering more effective engagement and personal growth in tertiary education.

SUMMARY:An introduction to projective assessment in practice 2024-2025
DESCRIPTION:Cost per session. \nProjective assessment techniques sit within the psychodynamic tradition. They are powerful tools to gain the voice of the child and explore aspects of their experience and internal world that may not be well understood. \nThis is a 6 – 8 session modular training course to introduce psychologists and psychotherapists to techniques and resources that can be easily incorporated into practice through a consultation / therapeutic framework. Attendees will have opportunities for reflective peer supervision and develop their skills in administrating\, analysing\, feeding back and reporting on projective material. We will be covering sentence completions tasks\, drawing techniques\, and story telling techniques. There are a limited number of tickets for individual sessions. Attendees will leave this CPD with practical tools that they can share with their services. SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - *Book Launch* Psychology for Teaching Assistants (3rd edition) with the authors
DESCRIPTION:The roles for teaching assistants have developed over the last 20 years. Whilst TAs are still widely used in supporting children with additional needs there is specific training in\, say emotional learning support assistants (ELSAs). Often TAs are asked to support some of the most difficult and challenging children and young people\, but with little or no training and quite variable amounts of support. \nPsychology for Teaching Assistants is a book which is intended to fill a gap for TAs and SENCos. It focuses on the knowledge that TAs may need in their roles. It was first published 20 years ago and a second edition appeared in 2011. This new edition goes further than the previous 2 volumes and includes information about ELSAs and working with neurodiverse students\, in particular those with diagnoses of some kinds of Autism Spectrum Condition. This is in addition to the information about attachment theory\, language development\, disaffected teenagers\, group processes and the effects of abuse on children. There is also a section on how institutions can unconsciously convey messages to undermine the status of TAs. \nThe original book was well reviewed by EPs and TAs alike. There was also a comment that it helped in the initial training of teachers. \nThe launch\, kindly hosted by Educational Psychology Reach-Out will include the contributors talking about their own experiences. We hope that all schools that use TAs will place a copy of this on their staffroom shelves.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - *Book Launch* Excluded from School: Complex Discourses and Psychological Perspectives with the authors
DESCRIPTION:Children are still being excluded from school and the use of separation from school has been an intervention adopted over centuries in many different contexts. \nExcluded from School is a book describing the incredibly complex lives of the students and their families who have been through the exclusion process. It sets out the accounts from the children\, their families\, the teachers who excluded and the staff who received these students. It first appeared in 2009 and this new edition goes further in including perspectives from critical race theory\, working in Pupil Referral Units and information on the lives of those excluded after the exclusion. \nThe original volume was a collaboration between two educational psychologists and two clinical psychologists. This new edition adds to this with three educational psychologists. \nA recent BBC Radio 4 programme featured a detailed interview with a man who had been excluded from school. He said that the original book was one that he valued and one of the few that he allowed on his limited bookshelf space. \nWe hope that this book will be read by teachers and parents of children at risk of exclusion and will be found on the shelves of all secondary school staff rooms as well as those in PRUs. Educational Psychology and behaviour support services are likely to find this of interest and of use in professional development. \nThe launch is kindly being hosted by the Educational Psychology Reach-Out team and will include the contributors talking about their experiences working in this field.
