SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Promoting the visibility of and facilitating positive change for homeless children and young people with Dr Marc Pescod\, Dr Poppy Lopez & Dr Leeya Roovis
DESCRIPTION:Overview: Since the introduction of the Education Act of 1944 and “Inclusion for All”\, the young homeless population has received little attention to ensure they get an equitable education.\nWith homelessness being associated with mental health issues\, substance abuse\, disruptive behaviour\, and poverty\, its experience on children and young people is often detrimental and profound (Bland and Shallcross\, 2015). Many find their challenges outside of school often have an impact on their ability to engage in their learning with 44% of unaccompanied young homeless people not in education\, employment and training. However\, with little research in this area\, the extent of their educational difficulties is not well known.\nThis session aims to bring this hidden population into the EP narrative through discussing the educational experiences of (homeless children and young people)\, by drawing on the learnings of three doctoral theses (Pescod\, M.\, 2020\, Lopez\, P.\, 2020 and Roovis\, L\, 2021). We will share the voices of children living in temporary accommodation with their families\, as well as homeless young people living alone\, and consider how EPs can contribute to change for this group. We reflect that the UK educational system is not currently positioned to effectively support this population\, without the necessary methods to identify YHP and/or their families to therefore provide targeted and evidenced-based support. The workshop concludes that EPs\, and the education system more widely\, have a responsibility to identify less privileged populations and mobilise to ensure meaningful support.

It is also the pre-requisite for the Trainer program which may be of particular interest to educational psychologists expanding their offer to schools. SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Action Research: How can we develop our own professional practice? with Dr Jamie Allen
DESCRIPTION:I will be discussing my doctoral research which I completed in the summer of 2022. It was an action research project which looked at my development as an Educational Psychologist (EP) through ten action research cycles. The work that I conducted was supporting a school to develop their restorative approaches through the five core areas of educational psychology practice (assessment\, consultation\, intervention\, training\, and research).\nI used a reflective framework (Giles et al.\, 2023) to critically reflect on my practice\, and I adapted McNiff and Whitehead’s (2011) action research cycle to track and highlight my development as an EP. This\, in turn\, allowed me to develop a living educational theory that will remain with me for as long as I am practicing.\nI wish to highlight the importance of the restorative approach\, and the EP role in supporting that alongside the importance of engaging in action research\, and the appropriateness of the methodology within the EP profession.

DESCRIPTION:Presenters:\nDr Jagdish Kaur Barn (Educational\, Child & Family Psychologist) and Natalie Colvin (Speech and Language Therapist specialising in complex needs). \nSeminar Outline:\nIn this seminar we will consider how an exploration of a child’s speech\, language\, and communication (SLC) skills is a crucial aspect of development and important when formulating an overall psychological profile following ongoing adversity and trauma. \nWe will outline how delayed SLC impacts many of the other areas considered in a holistic assessment (e.g. emotional presentation)\, how to identify SLC needs and what to do about it. \nWe will cover the following key points:\n What we mean by speech\, language\, communication.\n Typical speech\, language\, and communication development.\n How historical and ongoing adversity and trauma impacts development of speech\, language\, and communication.\n Avoiding misdiagnosis\, the importance of assessment through intervention and consideration of other factors (e.g. EAL).\n Interventions to support development (including working with caregivers).\n The questions to ask schools to obtain an understanding of a child’s current SLC strengths and needs.\n Referral routes when in-depth SALT assessments are needed.

SUMMARY:How to motivate children to enjoy reading using Self-Determination Theory
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that developing children’s reading abilities is hugely important in promoting educational achievements\, and that reading skills are a strong predictor towards outcomes later in life. However\, in 2023 The National Literacy Trust recorded the lowest levels of reading enjoyment since they started asking children and young people about this back in 2005. \nWith just 2 in 5 (43.4%) children and young people aged 8 to 18 reporting that they enjoyed reading in their free time\, this must act as a wake-up call for all those who support children and young people’s reading development. We need to have a conversation about how we motivate children to engage in reading. \nIn this session\, Principal Educational Psychologist Dr David Lamb will talk to you about different types of motivation and how adopting a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) perspective when supporting reading development can enable intrinsic motivation to flourish.\nDavid will also provide guidance on an effective reading strategy drawing upon SDT principles that adults can easily implement when helping children to read. \nThis session is suitable for anyone who wants to support children to read for pleasure whether this is at home or within the educational settings they work.
