SUMMARY:Acknowledging your racism (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, we deepen participants understanding of systemic racism and the spectrum of privilege. It challenges the participants to examine their behaviours and take close looks at some of the views they have held since a very young age\, e.g. this area is a “bad” area\, because it has a high proportion of black/brown people living in it\, or that young black men in tracksuits are “thugs”. We think about where these messages come from and how people are indoctrinated by the media. \nParticipants will: \n\nConfront their own racism and unconscious biases\nBecome aware of the ways they treat people differently based on race\nThink about practical changes they can make in their workplaces

SUMMARY:Dynamic Assessment CPD (webinars)
DESCRIPTION:Online \n03/09/20 and 10/09/20 \nImproving our Dynamic Assessment feels incredibly timely\, especially given many concerns over the accuracy and legitimacy of standardised assessments when children return to school following such a long time away from education. \nDr Jane Yeomans is a highly experienced and skilled Dynamic Assessment (DA) trainer and practitioner. In these workshops\, she will lead us through a refresher on DA before taking us a step further and breathing new life into our DA practice to achieve the most out of this. \nThese workshops will develop our DA skills\, leaving us confident in using DA in practice and knowing how to get the most from our sessions: \n•A refresher of the core principles of DA; \n•Test selection and use to expand our repertoire of tools; \n•How to master mediation and get the most out of our DA sessions with children (including live modelling); \n•Use of commercially produced materials dynamically; and \n•Best practice in recording\, reporting and feeding back DA to achieve the best outcomes from this.

SUMMARY:Therapeutic interventions to address children and young people’s anxiety\, depression\, trauma and disruptive behaviour: A modular approach
DESCRIPTION:Cost plus VAT \nThis masterclass will help practitioners working in social care\, health\, education and youth justice address the complex needs of an increasing number of children and young people presenting with symptoms of anxiety\, mood disturbance\, trauma and disruptive behaviour. The stressful and traumatic impact on children and young people’s lives of Covid 19 has increased this need. \nThere are helpful NICE guidelines on evidence-based therapeutic interventions for single forms of a disorder\, but these will not for work with children and young people who present with overlapping problems\, e.g. disruptive behaviours\, associated with significant mood disturbance and self-harming behaviour. This masterclass will present the Hope for Children and Families (HfCF) innovative approach; the development of a common practice elements approach which identifies evidence-based therapeutic procedures and integrates them into a Library of Modules.

SUMMARY:Masterclass: Therapeutic interventions to reduce the harmful effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences
DESCRIPTION:The programme will outline the increasing evidence of the impact of Adverse Experiences of Childhood (ACEs) on the health and well-being of children and young people extending into adult life. There is a growing demand for interventions to prevent their harmful effects. \nKey Learning Points: \n•To appreciate current views about the nature and range of ACEs which have developed \n•To understand the way in which ACEs are present at a population level\, and in particular clinical populations \n•The traumatic and stressful nature of ACEs and the impact on development of children and young people into adult life\, including an understanding of neurobiological effects -toxic stress. \n•To appreciate the range of interventions available and recommended to reduce the harmful impact of ACEs and their limitations \n•The development of modular approaches which ‘distils’ effective practice elements from across the field of interventions \n•How modular approaches can be utilised as part of a comprehensive holistic approach to establishing a profile of needs\, and develop an effective intervention which prevents further ACEs and modify their impacts \n•To can be adapted for use across different types of service provision at all stages of the therapeutic process

SUMMARY:Promoting mental health in learning settings
DESCRIPTION:Delivered via Zoom Webinar \nFeaturing Marnie Aston and her Mental Health Audit Tool \nNot just another day on ‘Behaviour Management’ – Our Mental Health Day goes well beyond a rewards and sanctions approach to ‘behaviour’. We will be focused on those young people for whom rewards and punishments do not always work and who confuse the adults who work with them. SUMMARY:Movement differences and how to accommodate them
DESCRIPTION:Delivered via Zoom Webinar \nUnderstanding movement differences in a non medical way can be key to understanding and including people who otherwise may seem very challenging and difficult. All people with autism\, labels of ADHD but also those with labels such as Tourettes have movement differences creating difficulties in: \n•Stopping \n•Starting \n•Switching \n•Combining \n•Continuing \n•Executing complex movements \nAll of us in the world moving around in human bodies experience difficulties in one or more of these areas. But some people have much greater issues – the volume has been turned up and the difficulty is much greater. In this workshop we will explore and understand these difficulties better… practical strategies can then follow.

SUMMARY:Working out sensory sensitivities
DESCRIPTION:Delivered via Zoom Webinar \nSensory super sensitivities are a key area to explore when planning and delivering the inclusion of a child or young person. Sometimes an autistic child may behave in a ways that are hard to understand. \nOften this is linked to super sensory sensitivities. A person who struggles to deal with everyday sensory information can experience sensory\, or information overload. Too much can cause stress\, anxiety\, and even physical pain. This can result in withdrawal\, shut down\, challenging behaviour or meltdown. \n‘The human brain receives all of the information that we know about the world and each other through our sensory system. There is no other way for this information to be gathered. People on the autism spectrum describe their experience in this world as that of being overwhelmed by the sensory stimulation they receive from the environments they are forced to deal with. Touch is like a tidal wave\, sounds are too loud\, language distorted\, vision fragmented\, focusing on each piece separately rather than the whole\, odors often sickening and tastes unbearable. These descriptions have now been validated through research on the specific construction of the brain’. – Gail Gillingham
