SUMMARY:The role of the psychologist in responding to youth suicide in schools
DESCRIPTION:£153 for BPS Members \nThis workshop will prepare psychologists to respond ethically and confidently using evidence-based strategies to a suicide death within a school setting. \nThe impact of a youth suicide on a school community can be immediate and traumatic. International research has identified a phenomenon known as suicide ‘contagion’\, where a person’s knowledge of (or exposure to) a suicide increases the likelihood of them viewing suicide as an option. In these circumstances schools need clear and practical information\, which they can rely on for guidance and direction\, to reduce this risk and support help-seeking behaviours among their student cohort. Psychologists working in schools are therefore in a prime position to provide this information and to guide and support the school following the death of a student (i.e. complete a suicide postvention response). The topics covered will include: \n \n\n\n\n\n\nLegal implications for school\nManaging social media\, memorials\, anniversaries and birthday\nManaging suicide attempt\nManaging a death that cannot be referred to as a ‘suicide’

SUMMARY:Advanced skills in Dynamic Assessment
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to develop educational psychologists’ existing skills in dynamic assessment\, specifically through the means of using a video-enhanced feedback approach. The digital feedback approach will be demonstrated as an effective means of feeding back the results of dynamic assessment in such a way as to promote the potential success of a subsequent intervention plan. \nThis workshop will consider this unique combination of dynamic assessment and video-enhanced feedback using real-life case studies as a basis for practical activities. The training is suitable for those who have attended previous dynamic assessment training and who wish to develop their existing skills further using video and evidence-based outcomes.

SUMMARY:"A Disorder for Everyone!" - Challenging the culture of psychiatric diagnosis
DESCRIPTION:Prices range from £0- £127.45 \nThis day is for anyone who is interested in and concerned about the current debates in ‘mental health.’ \nIt provides a space to explore the critical questions of the day around the biomedical model and the narrative of ‘diagnosis and disorder!’ \nAttendees from past AD4E events have included people who identify as the following :- \npeople with lived experience of emotional distress\, supporters of people with lived experience\, survivors\, psychologists\, journalists\, activists\, counsellors & psychotherapists\, service users\, service refusers\, students & trainees\, mental health support professionals\, psychiatrists\, managers\, academics\, researchers\, and individuals with a general personal interest. \nAbout the day \nThe event features not just professionals but people from a diverse range of backgrounds who have an essential contribution to make to the debate. \nLucy Johnstone presents the current debates and controversies about psychiatric diagnosis. It is increasingly acknowledged\, even within the mental health establishment\, that categories like ‘schizophrenia’\, ‘bipolar disorder’ and ‘personality disorder’ lack validity. The assumption that distress is best understood as disease can have very serious consequences for the individual\, their identity\, and their path to recovery. In the morning Lucy will present alternatives to diagnosis which can help people to make sense of experiences of distress\, however extreme\, and which are based on working together to explore personal meaning. In the afternoon Lucy will introduce participants to the Power Threat Meaning Framework

SUMMARY:Gender diversity: What do educational psychologists need to know and what can they do?
DESCRIPTION:A major emphasis in the work of educational psychologists is on inclusion and how psychology can contribute to inclusive educational policies and practices. Across the last decade awareness has grown that educational psychologists need to embrace a broader conceptualisation of inclusion. While traditionally inclusion has focused on special educational needs and disabilities\, and ethnicity\, the increase in children and young people questioning their gender identity means that EPs need to consider the implications of gender inclusion and gender inclusive practices. This day is designed to examine thinking and practice about gender diversity and gender inclusion\, the implications for EP work and\, particularly\, what EPs can do to support staff in educational settings that may be uncertain about how best to act.
