SUMMARY:Post pandemic anxiety in autistic children and young people
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic caused massive disruption to all our lives This has had a particular impact on the lives of Autistic children and young people (CYP). As things return to a ‘new normal’\, many educationalists and parents are reporting that there continue to be major concerns about Autistic CYP in terms of emotional well-being\, high anxiety levels\, non-attendance\, educational progress and the well-being of school staff. \nThis online Study Morning has been organised by the Educational Psychology Autism Special Interest Group (EP-ASIG). The keynote speaker is Professor Liz Pellicano\, University College London\, whose research has sought to understand and investigate the perspectives and experiences of al group of Australian children and their parents and to consider how some of the more positive aspects of the experience might inform a way forward for those working with such CYP. \nLiz will talk about research on the experiences of Autistic students and parental experiences during the pandemic and there will be an opportunity for questions.

SUMMARY:Introduction to projective assessment in EP practice: House\, person\, tree technique
DESCRIPTION:Projective techniques are powerful tools to gain the voice of the child and explore aspects of their experience that may not be well understood. When carefully analysed and triangulated with other sources of information\, projective techniques can open up conversations with children\, families and staff that can facilitate deep understanding of difficulties\, and help to create change. \nThis course will provide an introduction to techniques and resources that can be easily incorporated into EP work. Attendees will have opportunities for reflective peer supervision and develop their skills in administrating\, analysing\, feeding back and reporting on projective material. \nLearning Objectives:\nTo provide an introduction to the history of the test and how it is used.\nTo explore administration of the test.\nTo develop an understanding of approaches to analysis of the test.\nTo develop confidence in the analysis of the test through practice and reflective peer supervision of a live case. Participants are encouraged to try out the test and bring material to the session. It is hoped that each person will have an opportunity to present material throughout the course.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD): The Parent Perspective and The Role of Educational Psychologists (EPs) with Dr Rebecca Griffiths
DESCRIPTION:During this webinar Rebecca will present doctoral research which gathered the voice of adoptive parents and foster carers who parent a child with a confirmed diagnosis of foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). \nTheir views were explored in relation to their experiences of the family-school interaction\, their perceptions of their child’s experience of school\, as well as their experiences of educational psychologist (EP) involvement with their child. \nThe findings highlighted that parents of children with FASD consider school to be overwhelmingly challenging for their children. \nThis related in part to within-child factors linked to FASD\, however\, to a greater extent these difficulties were systemic\, meaning that positive change is possible and there is certainly a role for EPs in supporting this. Amongst other findings\, the need for improved knowledge and understanding of FASD within the school system and amongst EPs was identified. \nIt is hoped that this webinar\, although a brief overview\, will go some way to supporting this. Recommendations for how EPs might undertake a more supportive role in this context will also be provided. \nSign up here

DESCRIPTION:Used well\, groups can be a powerful tool\, enabling children to learn to work safely and productively together. This experiential qualification enables practitioners to develop the skills\, knowledge and understanding to make effective use of a therapeutic group to support change for children and young people effectively. \nWho is this course for?\nThis qualification is suitable for those staff using group work with children or young people in either school or care settings. It is also suitable for adoptive parents and guardians. Attendees will have opportunities for reflective peer supervision and develop their skills in administrating\, analysing\, feeding back and reporting on projective material. \nLearning Objectives:\nTo provide an introduction to the history of the test and how it is used.\nTo explore administration of the test.\nTo develop an understanding of approaches to analysis of the test.\nTo develop confidence in the analysis of the test through practice and reflective peer supervision of a live case. DESCRIPTION:#3 \nWe are pleased to have Natalie Walsh\, the Principal and SENDCo at SENDSCOPE joining us for this session. \nSENDSCOPE is an innovative alternative provision within South Liverpool\, which supports neuro-diverse young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). \nNatalie will be sharing some of her experiences working within an AP and will talk to how SENDSCOPE supports students with reintegration to mainstream settings or to transition to specialist provisions. \nThere will be time for a general discussion about how these experiences might apply to the systemic role of the EP and space for questions and answers. \nLooking forward to seeing you there! 🙂 \nGeneral group information\nLike many EPs\, my work has exposed me to the challenges of both working with APs in a ‘traditional’ sense (e.g.\, casework and individual assessment) and the organisational dynamics of these settings. \nI hoped that setting up a national working group\, or special interest group\, might enable us a space to share information\, practice-based evidence and experiences about working systemically in APs and support setting-level change. Additionally\, the group provides a space for reflection and peer supervision. \nThe group has a speaker or guest each session who might share their research and/or experiences of working in/with APs. There is then space to consider how this applies to working in APs\, including a discussion of the barriers and enablers of this type of work. \nI hope that the group will lead to research in this area and the potential for the development of a framework for EP practice in this area. \nThe group is open to Trainee EPs\, Assistant EPs\, EPs and other professionals who are interested in this area of work (e.g.\, school and AP staff). DESCRIPTION:The course will guide you through the layers of understanding the concept of executive functions\, how we assess these skills\, and bring it all together in a formulation that makes sense. \nThe Executive Functions CPD course is lead Dr Rebecca Ashton\, an experienced Educational Psychologist specialising in neuropsychology. She has a wealth of experience working with executive functioning issues in school casework and is excited to be sharing her knowledge and understanding in this area. \nThe Executive Functions: Connecting into Practice CPD course is in an eLearning format which can be taken at your own pace\, and used as a reference guide to come back to over time. It also includes a host of useful resources which can be utilised in your practice\, reflective activities to facilitate your learning\, and a space for the EP community to ask questions and share thoughts between us. \nWhat is included? \n• Training: The course is broken down into six core chapters to increase knowledge and skills across key areas relating to executive functions and our role as an Educational Psychologist. Each module encompasses a series of subchapters\, containing short animated videos\, links and resources\, which you can view at your own pace. \n• Content Packed: Defining what we mean by executive functions at different levels of specificity\, and understanding how those functions typically develop in children\, leads us on to how we can assess those skills in individual children. You won’t need to rush out and buy lots of expensive equipment – Dr Rebecca Ashton explains how you can gather data about executive functioning in a range of ways and bring it together in a coherent formulation. The course then goes on to get you thinking about how you talk about executive functions within consultations\, in order to come to a shared understanding about areas of strength and need. And\, of course\, we will talk about interventions that might feed into your action planning. \n• Assessments: There are a range of observational\, informal and standardised assessment approaches we look at in the course\, including a number of ideas and resources that can be utilised directly from your psychological toolkit. \n• Strategies: A detailed look at a range of evidence-based and practice-based strategies and interventions\, alongside practical ideas on how we can talk about Executive Functions with consultations to gain a shared understanding and jointly formulate helpful accommodations and interventions.

DESCRIPTION:EP research club aims to connect EPs who would like to engage in more research-based activity – of any kind: whether it’s reading\, writing\, planning projects\, analysing data and/or seeking to publish. We are an open and friendly group and we welcome anyone to join us – you can drop in any time that works for you. We currently meet online via Zoom. \nEach session has two parts: \n1.
