SUMMARY:Social justice and alternative provision
DESCRIPTION:Recent years have seen increased attention on the Alternative Provision (AP) sector across the United Kingdom with a focus on how it can work to improve the outcomes of children and young people (CYP). Despite this\, understandings of the effect of AP policies and practices upon social justice outcomes remain patchy (IntegratED\, 2022). This is particularly pertinent at a time when growing numbers of CYP are being enrolled in AP. Alongside this runs wider concern about the number of marginalised young people achieving poorer life outcomes with higher rates of prolonged unemployment\, homelessness\, and criminal activity. This is particularly the case for those facing disadvantages deriving from class\, race\, disability\, and gender positioning (Johnston and Bradford\, 2019). \nThis symposium contributes to understandings of the current context of AP policy and practice in England (and across the United Kingdom) by bringing together a diverse delegation of academics\, practitioners\, and sector representatives. Together\, we will seek to better understand the underlying issues affecting AP and to address any concerns regarding social justice from a cross-sector\, interdisciplinary perspective. \nIn this symposium\, we will explore various factors that may affect issues related to AP and social justice as well as insights from practice and research. \nWe ask: \n\nHow can we ensure that young people are welcomed\, valued\, and supported to stay in\, or return back\, to school and more generally to succeed in and beyond Alternative Provision?\nHow can Alternative Provision harness the potential of (disadvantaged) young people in order to help them grow and develop?\n\nSpeakers and Panellists\nProfessor Martin Mills\, Queensland University of Technology \nDr. Jodie Pennacchia\, Nottingham Trent University \nRobert Gasson\, Chief Executive. Wave Trust \nSarah Johnson\, National Organisation of PRUs and APs \nDr. Ian Thompson\, Oxford University \nCath Kitchen\, The Skylark Partnership \nDr. Andrew Malcolm\, University of Bedfordshire \nZahra Bei\, No More Exclusions \nNic Brindle\, Chief Vision Officer Youth Engagement Schools Trust \nDr. Craig Johnston\, University of Winchester \nKeynote: TBC \nWe also invite short papers\, provocations\, good practice ideas/workshops that explore the social justice issues and questions present in areas such as: \n\nCurrent research in the area of AP\nCurriculum and pedagogy in AP\nInnovative Practice in AP\nThe context of professional training and development for AP staff\nThe national policy context surrounding AP and its implications for practice\nAP funding and quality assurance\nCovid-19 and the AP context\nPapers\, workshops\, and short practice ideas welcome.\n\nTimeline\nAbstract Submission Deadline: Friday 17th June 2022 \nRegistration Deadline: Friday 15th July 2022 \nAbstracts should be no more than 200 words for papers and alternative formats (workshops etc). Please send this to Craig Johnston along with a brief bio and contact details.

SUMMARY:Common challenges in Thematic Analysis and how to avoid them with Virginia Braun & Victoria Clarke
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke will explore common challenges in thematic analysis (TA) research\, how to avoid them – and even how to rework your analysis if necessary. \nWith a Q&A hosted by fellow academics Nikki Hayfield and Gareth Terry\, this webinar will focus on Braun & Clarke’s reflexive TA approach\, but also consider the wider TA family of methods. You will get a chance to ask Ginny and Victoria about common research hurdles such as confusing themes and topic summaries\, “mashing up” incompatible approaches to TA and treating TA as a theory-free method.

SUMMARY:EP research club and group coaching - September 2022
DESCRIPTION:EP research club aims to connect EPs who would like to engage in more research-based activity – of any kind: whether it’s reading\, writing\, planning projects\, analysing data and/or seeking to publish. We are an open and friendly group and we welcome anyone to join us – you can drop in any time. We currently meet online via Zoom. \nEach session has two parts: \n\nA group coaching session (facilitated by Dr Fi Coley)\, in which we set goals\, share successes (and frustrations!)\, and explore and overcome our barriers to doing research-related work.\nProtected time for our own individual research pursuits: reading\, writing and research-based activities. We turn our cameras off and work on our own individual tasks\, before checking in at the end to celebrate what we’ve done.\n\nEP Research Club is the ideal space for motivation\, inspiration and accountability towards your research-based goals. Come join us! (It’s free!)
