DESCRIPTION:The course will guide you through the layers of understanding the concept of executive functions\, how we assess these skills\, and bring it all together in a formulation that makes sense. \nThe Executive Functions CPD course is lead Dr Rebecca Ashton\, an experienced Educational Psychologist specialising in neuropsychology. She has a wealth of experience working with executive functioning issues in school casework and is excited to be sharing her knowledge and understanding in this area. \nThe Executive Functions: Connecting into Practice CPD course is in an eLearning format which can be taken at your own pace\, and used as a reference guide to come back to over time. It also includes a host of useful resources which can be utilised in your practice\, reflective activities to facilitate your learning\, and a space for the EP community to ask questions and share thoughts between us. \nWhat is included? \n• Training: The course is broken down into six core chapters to increase knowledge and skills across key areas relating to executive functions and our role as an Educational Psychologist. Each module encompasses a series of subchapters\, containing short animated videos\, links and resources\, which you can view at your own pace. \n• Content Packed: Defining what we mean by executive functions at different levels of specificity\, and understanding how those functions typically develop in children\, leads us on to how we can assess those skills in individual children. SUMMARY:UCL Children and young people growing up in poverty: what can educational psychology contribute?
DESCRIPTION:Reduced rate: £15 for TEPs \nIn (2016) Psychologists Against Austerity wrote a briefing paper outlining the ‘damaging psychological costs of austerity policies’. Their report summarised five ‘Austerity Ailments’\, ways in which austerity policies impact specifically on mental health: \n\nhumiliation and shame;\nfear and distrust;\ninstability and insecurity;\nisolation and loneliness\nthe experience of being trapped and powerless.\n\nSince then we have lived through a global pandemic which has exacerbated existing health and social inequalities (Marmot\, 2020) and we are now in the context of a cost-of-living crisis. Given research findings highlighting the impact of poverty on children’s development (Cooper & Stewart\, 2021; Shonkoff & Garner\, 2012)\, alongside systemic impacts\, what should educational psychologists being doing to support this agenda; how can we work with our communities\, schools and families to improve the experiences of those we work with? \nThis conference will provide participants with a chance to hear about theory and up-to-date research around the impact of poverty on children and young people and their families\, so that they can contribute to debates around social justice and can develop practice in the profession and in their working contexts. \nPlease see our event flyer with the programme for the day. \nBook a place at the event.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Parents’ views on EBSNA: A solution-based exploration into successful reintegration with Dr Rachel Sawyer
DESCRIPTION:During this webinar\, I will present my doctoral research which aimed to explore parents’ views and experiences around supporting ‘emotionally-based school non-attendance’ (EBSNA; also known as ‘EBSA’\, characterised by difficulties with attending school driven by ‘severe emotional upset’; Berg 1969). \nAdopting a ‘solution-oriented’ approach\, this research gathered retrospective experiences of successful EBSNA support\, aiming to uncover ‘what works’ when supporting children and families experiencing this difficulty. This study additionally hoped to explore the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on such support and determine if opportunities to learn from practices during the school closure period may exist. \nThe resulting findings provides insight into the different forms of support accessed by parents when experiencing their child’s EBSNA\, identifying areas of success as well as improvement when considering EBSNA support from professionals across both schools and local authorities. These have been presented as a set of principles for professional practice (SPIRAL)\, providing a framework for professionals to use when designing and implementing EBSNA support. \nIt is hoped that this webinar will provide a brief overview of my research and promote conversation around the inclusion and utilisation of parent views in this area going forwards.

DESCRIPTION:EP research club aims to connect EPs who would like to engage in more research-based activity – of any kind: whether it’s reading\, writing\, planning projects\, analysing data and/or seeking to publish. We are an open and friendly group and we welcome anyone to join us – you can drop in any time. We currently meet online via Zoom. \nEach session has two parts: \n1. A group coaching session (facilitated by Dr Fi Coley)\, in which we set goals\, share successes (and frustrations!)\, and explore and overcome our barriers to doing research-related work. \n2. Protected time for our own individual research pursuits: reading\, writing and research-based activities. SUMMARY:Introduction to projective assessment in EP practice: Children's apperception test (CAT)
DESCRIPTION:Projective techniques are powerful tools to gain the voice of the child and explore aspects of their experience that may not be well understood. When carefully analysed and triangulated with other sources of information\, projective techniques can open up conversations with children\, families and staff that can facilitate deep understanding of difficulties\, and help to create change. \nThis course will provide an introduction to techniques and resources that can be easily incorporated into EP work. Attendees will have opportunities for reflective peer supervision and develop their skills in administrating\, analysing\, feeding back and reporting on projective material.\nThe course is made up of 7 sessions. The greatest benefit will come from attending the course as a whole\, but there are limited tickets available for individual sessions. All sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 6-8pm via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. \nLearning Objectives:\nTo provide an introduction to the history of the test and how it is used.\nTo explore administration of the test.\nTo develop an understanding of approaches to analysis of the test.\nTo develop confidence in the analysis of the test through practice and reflective peer supervision of a live case. Participants are encouraged to try out the test and bring material to the session. It is hoped that each person will have an opportunity to present material throughout the course.
