SUMMARY:Webinar: an introduction to making psychology accessible on the web
DESCRIPTION:Aim\nThe aim of this webinar is to introduce psychologists (and others) to important concepts around accessibility on the web\, given that psychologists are creating more web content than ever before. This has particularly been the case since the start of covid restrictions in March 2020. \nThis is important for Psychology Services as: \nPeople may not have a choice when using a public sector website or mobile app\, so it’s important they work for everyone. The people who need them the most are often the people who find them hardest to use.  \n(Gov.uk\, 2018\, Understanding accessibility requirements) \nWho is this webinar for?\nThis webinar is for anyone creating content for the web. For example\, \n\nAnyone creating something that others will see on a screen\nAnyone creating content in visual\, audio or video formats\nPsychologists\, assistant psychologists or administrative support staff who create or put content on the web\nThose working in psychology services where resources are being created for clients and then shared online\nThose writing articles or posts designed to support others\nThose who use social media in any professional capacity\n\nIntended learning outcomes\nBy the end of this webinar you will be able to \n\nUnderstand what accessibility is and why it is important\nRecognise the ethical and legal imperative for accessible digital content\nBegin to critically assess the accessibility of your own content\nCreate more accessible content\nKnow where to go to find more help and advice\n\nBooking\n \n\n \nWho is running this webinar\nRichard West\nRichard is digital lead for edpsy. He has worked in web and digital for 20 years\, supporting LAs\, councils\, charities and government to enhance the experience for their users and clients. Richard has run training for over 100 organisations. SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - How are young people engaging with concerns around climate change? with Dr Rob Lee
DESCRIPTION:An ever increasing amount of research indicates that some young people are significantly concerned about climate change. However\, this may look quite different for different young people. This webinar will draw upon my thesis research\, in which I used Q methodological analysis to explore three different patterns of engagement that young people may adopt towards their climate concerns. I will also introduce some helpful concepts from the field of climate psychology that may help illuminate some aspects of these patterns. Finally\, I will provide some suggestions for how schools and educational psychologists can help support young people who experience significant concern\, through the adoption of a whole-school approach.

SUMMARY:Inclusion Matters 2023: 'It takes a village...'
DESCRIPTION:About the day\n  \nBook at a place at the conference \nIn our present times of global upheaval\, our school communities need to be places of security and stability for our children. All schools work with children and families who face many challenges as they interact with an education system that struggles to accommodate diverse needs. \nIncreasingly\, schools have become the only remaining ‘universal service’\, open to all and free at the point of access\, with increased pressures on school staff as other services have fallen away or ceased to exist at all. \n“It takes a Village to raise a child…” is an African proverb meaning that an entire community of people must interact with children for those children to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment. \nOur Inclusion Matters conference this year offers an opportunity for school staff\, education professionals and educational psychologists to come together and consider what it means for a school to be at the centre of the ‘village’\, to listen to ideas from others seeking solutions\, to experience different ways of coming together as a community and to gather strategies and resources to sustain you through the coming months. \nFind out more about the keynote talks and speakers \nInformation about seminars on the day \nTickets\nThere are several ticket options to make the day as accessible as possible: \n\nStandard tickets – £150\nFree tickets – Available to trainee EPs\, Assistant EPs and anyone who works with refugees and asylum seekers (choose ‘OTHER’ on the booking form)\n\nBook for the conference \n

SUMMARY:EP research club and group coaching – June 2023

We are an open and friendly group and we welcome anyone to join us – you can drop in any time. We currently meet online via Zoom. \nEach session has two parts: \n1. A group coaching session (facilitated by Dr Fi Coley)\, in which we set goals\, share successes (and frustrations!)\, and explore and overcome our barriers to doing research-related work. \n2. Protected time for our own individual research pursuits: reading\, writing and research-based activities. We turn our cameras off and work on our own individual tasks\, before checking in at the end to celebrate what we’ve done. \nEP Research Club is the ideal space for motivation\, inspiration and accountability towards your research-based goals. SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Promoting the visibility of and facilitating positive change for homeless children and young people with Dr Marc Pescod\, Dr Poppy Lopez & Dr Leeya Roovis
DESCRIPTION:Overview: Since the introduction of the Education Act of 1944 and “Inclusion for All”\, the young homeless population has received little attention to ensure they get an equitable education.\nWith homelessness being associated with mental health issues\, substance abuse\, disruptive behaviour\, and poverty\, its experience on children and young people is often detrimental and profound (Bland and Shallcross\, 2015). Many find their challenges outside of school often have an impact on their ability to engage in their learning with 44% of unaccompanied young homeless people not in education\, employment and training. However\, with little research in this area\, the extent of their educational difficulties is not well known.\nThis session aims to bring this hidden population into the EP narrative through discussing the educational experiences of (homeless children and young people)\, by drawing on the learnings of three doctoral theses (Pescod\, M.\, 2020\, Lopez\, P.\, 2020 and Roovis\, L\, 2021). We will share the voices of children living in temporary accommodation with their families\, as well as homeless young people living alone\, and consider how EPs can contribute to change for this group. We reflect that the UK educational system is not currently positioned to effectively support this population\, without the necessary methods to identify YHP and/or their families to therefore provide targeted and evidenced-based support. The workshop concludes that EPs\, and the education system more widely\, have a responsibility to identify less privileged populations and mobilise to ensure meaningful support.

SUMMARY:Introduction to projective assessment in EP practice
DESCRIPTION:Projective techniques are powerful tools to gain the voice of the child and explore aspects of their experience that may not be well understood. When carefully analysed and triangulated with other sources of information\, projective techniques can open up conversations with children\, families and staff that can facilitate deep understanding of difficulties\, and help to create change.

(Headteacher) \nThis interactive day links wellbeing and learning and shows how CS makes a difference to both. The day is practical\, hands-on and fun. It is also the pre-requisite for the Trainer program which may be of particular interest to educational psychologists expanding their offer to schools. This day is suitable for all teachers of both primary and secondary students and other educators.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - “Bridging the gap: Understanding the 'Why' and 'How' of inclusion for Autistic children" with Dr Soraya Khanna and Dr Elizabeth Atkinson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for webinar that focuses on promoting inclusion and a sense of belonging in autistic youth. Our webinar explores two distinct yet interconnected thesis doctoral projects. \nIn the first part of our discussion\, we will explore the ‘why do we need to promote inclusion of autistic children’ with a presentation outlining a qualitative synthesis that explored the experiences of autistic students during their primary school years. The findings highlight the impact the school environment can have on mental health and what other people can do to support. \nMoving on to the ‘how\,’ the second part outlines a study focusing on a novel application of an ‘imagined contact’ intervention aimed at improving children’s responses towards their autistic peers as a potential way to promote systemic change.
