When carefully analysed and triangulated with other sources of information\, projective techniques can open up conversations with children\, families and staff that can facilitate deep understanding of difficulties\, and help to create change.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Circle Solutions: Sue Roffey
DESCRIPTION:£120 early bird rate \nSocial-emotional learning needs to be safe\, strengths-based and solution-focused. Circle Solutions does this using the ASPIRE framework of Agency\, Safety\, Positivity\, Inclusion\, Respect and Equity. It has the potential to build confidence in students and change school culture. \nCircle Solutions not only addresses students’ social and emotional development but by creating a friendly and harmonious atmosphere it improves the wellbeing of the whole school. (Headteacher) \nThis interactive day links wellbeing and learning and shows how CS makes a difference to both. The day is practical\, hands-on and fun. It is also the pre-requisite for the Trainer program which may be of particular interest to educational psychologists expanding their offer to schools. This day is suitable for all teachers of both primary and secondary students and other educators.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - “Bridging the gap: Understanding the 'Why' and 'How' of inclusion for Autistic children" with Dr Soraya Khanna and Dr Elizabeth Atkinson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for webinar that focuses on promoting inclusion and a sense of belonging in autistic youth. Our webinar explores two distinct yet interconnected thesis doctoral projects. \nIn the first part of our discussion\, we will explore the ‘why do we need to promote inclusion of autistic children’ with a presentation outlining a qualitative synthesis that explored the experiences of autistic students during their primary school years. The findings highlight the impact the school environment can have on mental health and what other people can do to support. \nMoving on to the ‘how\,’ the second part outlines a study focusing on a novel application of an ‘imagined contact’ intervention aimed at improving children’s responses towards their autistic peers as a potential way to promote systemic change.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Action Research: How can we develop our own professional practice? with Dr Jamie Allen
DESCRIPTION:I will be discussing my doctoral research which I completed in the summer of 2022. It was an action research project which looked at my development as an Educational Psychologist (EP) through ten action research cycles. The work that I conducted was supporting a school to develop their restorative approaches through the five core areas of educational psychology practice (assessment\, consultation\, intervention\, training\, and research).\nI used a reflective framework (Giles et al.\, 2023) to critically reflect on my practice\, and I adapted McNiff and Whitehead’s (2011) action research cycle to track and highlight my development as an EP. This\, in turn\, allowed me to develop a living educational theory that will remain with me for as long as I am practicing.\nI wish to highlight the importance of the restorative approach\, and the EP role in supporting that alongside the importance of engaging in action research\, and the appropriateness of the methodology within the EP profession.

SUMMARY:Effects of adversity & trauma on speech\, language & communication development
DESCRIPTION:Presenters:\nDr Jagdish Kaur Barn (Educational\, Child & Family Psychologist) and Natalie Colvin (Speech and Language Therapist specialising in complex needs). \nSeminar Outline:\nIn this seminar we will consider how an exploration of a child’s speech\, language\, and communication (SLC) skills is a crucial aspect of development and important when formulating an overall psychological profile following ongoing adversity and trauma. \nWe will outline how delayed SLC impacts many of the other areas considered in a holistic assessment (e.g. emotional presentation)\, how to identify SLC needs and what to do about it. \nWe will cover the following key points:\n What we mean by speech\, language\, communication.\n Typical speech\, language\, and communication development.\n How historical and ongoing adversity and trauma impacts development of speech\, language\, and communication.\n Avoiding misdiagnosis\, the importance of assessment through intervention and consideration of other factors (e.g. EAL).\n Interventions to support development (including working with caregivers).\n The questions to ask schools to obtain an understanding of a child’s current SLC strengths and needs.\n Referral routes when in-depth SALT assessments are needed.

SUMMARY:How to motivate children to enjoy reading using Self-Determination Theory
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that developing children’s reading abilities is hugely important in promoting educational achievements\, and that reading skills are a strong predictor towards outcomes later in life. However\, in 2023 The National Literacy Trust recorded the lowest levels of reading enjoyment since they started asking children and young people about this back in 2005. \nWith just 2 in 5 (43.4%) children and young people aged 8 to 18 reporting that they enjoyed reading in their free time\, this must act as a wake-up call for all those who support children and young people’s reading development. We need to have a conversation about how we motivate children to engage in reading. \nIn this session\, Principal Educational Psychologist Dr David Lamb will talk to you about different types of motivation and how adopting a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) perspective when supporting reading development can enable intrinsic motivation to flourish.\nDavid will also provide guidance on an effective reading strategy drawing upon SDT principles that adults can easily implement when helping children to read. \nThis session is suitable for anyone who wants to support children to read for pleasure whether this is at home or within the educational settings they work.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - The EP role in addressing inadequate housing with Dr Paige Garbett
DESCRIPTION:This session explores the educational psychologist’s role in supporting children\, young people\, and their families with housing. It aims to discuss our relevance and remit to support and work within the area of housing\, drawing on community psychology and social justice initiatives to explore how EPs may work and influence practice in the housing sector. The first part of the seminar will talk through the national context of housing\, pre-existing literature before a walk through of the housing structures within the local area I work as an EP. It will go onto discuss relevant legislation relating to addressing children living in inadequate housing situations\, responsibilities of multi-agency teams and explores the literature surrounding inadequate housing and child development. The session aims to discuss and reflect on: \n– EPs current practice – identifying perceived barriers to this line of work as well as perceived benefits\, \n– Identifying the relevant psychological theory and how this may impact on our formulations of children’s experienced/presenting needs \n– Identifying and discussing potential avenues of support around housing needs for the children and families we may work with. \nThe session will also explore suggestions for further research\, policy development and the feasibility of incorporating this work into practice within educational psychology services as well as the education sector as a whole.
