SUMMARY:Motivational interviewing: conversations for change within schools
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes trying to offer support to adults working with children and young people does not always go as well as expected. To what extent are we able to stand in the shoes of a teacher or parent\, and understand why change might be difficult? Motivational interviewing is a person-centred counselling style developed within the fields of substance use and healthcare\, to support clients who are not always ready for change. Its philosophy\, process and skills are potentially useful in school-based consultations to help develop motivation and confidence for change. This seminar will consider the following: \nWhy is change hard?\nWhat helps people to think about change?\nWhy is empathy so important?\nHow are the philosophy\, processes and skills of motivational interviewing helpful in conversations for change? \n(Lecture Theatre C5.1)

SUMMARY:Introduction to Circle Solution for student wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Circle Solutions is an evidence-based framework for social and emotional learning based on the ASPIRE principles of Agency\, Safety\, Positivity\, Inclusion\, Respect and Equity. \nIt grows ’solutionaries’ – kids with answers to things that matter. This includes building a positive emotional climate for learning. \nSchools using Circle Solutions are finding this is an effective way of encouraging students to take responsibility for the emotional climate of their classroom\, and is therefore an excellent way to stop bullying behaviours and increase engagement. The framework is appropriate for all ages. This workshop is interactive\, experiential and playful. Participants will learn the research evidence that underpins this approach and understand how it enhances both behavioural and learning outcomes.

SUMMARY:Neuroscience\, education and psychology
DESCRIPTION:This day will critically consider ‘brain based research’ and consider the implications of this for those working with children. \nBetween 2000 and 2016 the number of research publications focusing on neuro- topics in education have increased more than 10 fold. Alongside this\, neuro- based terms and concepts are entering in to the everyday language of teacher and often offered as explanations for difficulties. Over the past several years\, mainstream media has reported that teaching bodies are pushing for neuro-education for teachers to help children learn better\, develop better and maintain wellbeing. Established psychological theories and frameworks are increasingly adopting a ‘neuro-flavour’ e.g. attachment\, emotion coaching\, attentional skills. As professionals who frequently interact with teachers and parents\, EPs must develop their understanding and skills in this area and their ability to critically evaluate some of the complex concepts underpinning eye-catching media headlines. \nBy attending this day participants will: \n\nHave a greater understanding of basic brain anatomy and processes\nBe able to describe the types of techniques and tools used to understand the brain\nBe able to adopt a critical approach to ‘brain-based research’\nDevelop and explicit awareness of some of the key cognitive biases that people may experience when confronted with neuro- concepts\nUnderstand and challenge some of the most common educational myths\nBegin to develop an understanding of the importance of touch for children\, drawing on neuroscientific evidence\nHave the opportunity to consider the implications of an increasing focus on ‘educational neuroscience’
