SUMMARY:“Race” and Culture – Belonging within Educational Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Training and working as an Educational Psychologist (EP) is a challenging journey. In addition to academic and work demands\, Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals may face an additional challenge of trying to fit in with others with the service or the course. A sense of belonging to the EP team or training course is important for the mental health and wellbeing of the TEP/EP. There are a number of different factors that may influence the sense of belonging for a trainee or an EP. One aspect is their relationship with their supervisor and the supervisee-supervisor relationship. \nThe aim of this session would be to consider the impact of supervisory relationship experiences of TEPs and EPs from Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Communities. This may include discussions on: \nDeveloping and understanding of how BAME TEPs/EPs see themselves.  \nReflecting on what is impact for Educational Psychologists in supervision.  \nUnderstanding Educational Psychologist cultural identity and self-reflection. \nConsidering the ways forward in making supervision culturally responsive. \nRoom 206 (2nd Floor)

SUMMARY:Mental health and wellbeing in education: How can we respond?
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few years\, concerns about the mental health of students have been raised extensively by the media. Most educators in psychology recognise that our students sometimes struggle with their mental health. This timely workshop provides educators in higher education and pre-university teachers with an opportunity to discuss and share practice. \nThe day will include discussions of Mental Health First Aid training in universities and schools\, and will explore other initiatives that have been employed to support students’ mental health. \nWe know that our students are part of a wider community\, and it is important to open up the conversation across society. In the afternoon we welcome bestselling author Dr Dean Burnett\, who will be talking about having wider discussions about Mental Health\, including what he has learned from publishing his recent book aimed at teenagers “Why Your Parents Are Driving You Up the Wall and What To Do About It” and new audio book “Psycho-Logical!” and how he has approached writing about mental health for general public. \nWe anticipate that workshop participants will leave with ideas for how to adapt their own practice to promote good mental health and wellbeing among their students.
