SUMMARY:Supporting children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing: Mental Health Support Teams. An update on research\, policy and practice
DESCRIPTION:Leading Edge Day Conference hosted by UCL’s Educational Psychology Group.\nChildren and young people’s mental health has long been an important element of the work of educational psychologists (EPs). \nGiven continuing concerns and the societal changes we have experienced since the publication of the government’s green paper (2017)\, a focus on this topic is timely. The day will provide colleagues with updates regarding the government’s vision and policy for supporting children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing\, as well as reflecting on developments relating to Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs). We will also hear about cutting edge research. The afternoon will focus on EP practice with examples of the role EPs have played in MHSTs and in developing tools to gather the views of children and young people. \nView the programme for the day \nThis conference is an in-person event with limited places and a live stream webinar will also be available via Zoom\, both of which require registering. We do not accept purchase orders or process invoices for this event and payment is through the UCL Store only. \nPrices:\n\nIn person – £85\nOnline – £25\n\nTEPs qualify for free online tickets. You can request one by emailing our admin team \nPlease note:\nIf you have requested an online place via email (TEPs) or secured via payment\, you will be added to our list and will be emailed the Online Zoom link a few days before the event on Friday 28th March 2025. Due to the current high volume of emails\, please do not email us again before then.

SUMMARY:FASD – Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder management strategies 2025
DESCRIPTION:FASD is a complex neuro-disability and this second course builds on the themes from the Intro course. It considers the impact on the new NICE quality standard on FASD and the role of different professionals. It explores how sensory processing issues may affect the person’s presentation. It looks at how to reframe behaviours and different strategies that can help when working or caring for with someone with FASD in different settings. All people with FASD are different and options for post-18 will be considered.\nThe course contains a combination of slides\, videos\, interactive exercises and case studies. \nParticipants should think of any people they are working with that have or are at risk of having FASD as this would be useful for discussion and reflection.

SUMMARY:Understanding the power\, impact and recovery journey from shame with Betsy de Thierry
DESCRIPTION:In this training day Betsy will lead us through an exploration of what shame is and how it is experienced. Her definition in her book on shame is: When shame is experienced\, it functions as an urgent signal that danger is here: the danger of rejection\, failure\, exposure and abandonment. It is an experience rooted in interpersonal relationships. It threatens the very basic human experience of being alive and needing to belong\, be loved and be accepted. p15 The Simple Guide to Understanding Shame. (2018). \nWe will reflect and consider the impact of shame on children who have experienced developmental trauma. \nWe will consider what recovery can look like and how we can facilitate it.

SUMMARY:EP Reach-Out webinar - Unveiling therapeutic thinking’s impact on school behaviour with Dr Ellie Crooks
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ellie Crooks is a passionate Child and Educational Psychologist working in Cambridgeshire\, she is dedicated to transforming the way schools approach behaviour. \nHer doctoral research\, Unveiling Therapeutic Thinking’s Impact on School Behaviour: A Realist Evaluation\, highlighted both the factors that drive success and the barriers that hinder meaningful systemic change. \nThis research fuelled her to deepen her understanding of behaviourist approaches in education\, particularly in light of the ongoing use—and government endorsement—of harmful practices. \nIf awareness of their detrimental impact were widespread\, these methods would no longer persist. In this session\, Dr. Ellie will share key insights from her research before shifting to a passionate call for urgent reform.
