Mentoring
Mentoring is a learning relationship, involving the sharing of skills, knowledge, and expertise between a mentor and mentee through developmental conversations, experience sharing, and role modelling. The relationship may cover a variety of contexts, and is an inclusive two-way partnership for mutual learning that values differences. (EMCC)
A mentor acts as a guide and adviser at various stages in someone’s career, so a mentor and mentee are usually from within the same professional group. Mentors should be conscious of their own biases, mentoring competence and preconceived ideas. In order to be self-aware, reflective practice is needed e.g. reflective journal. Mentoring usually follows the following four processes:
- Confirming the personal goals (these can change over time)
- Encouraging self-management of learning
- Providing support in moving towards the goals
- Assisting the evaluation of success and learning (Parsloe and Leedham, 2009)
