How to motivate children to enjoy reading using Self-Determination Theory
- This event has passed.

It is well known that developing children’s reading abilities is hugely important in promoting educational achievements, and that reading skills are a strong predictor towards outcomes later in life. However, in 2023 The National Literacy Trust recorded the lowest levels of reading enjoyment since they started asking children and young people about this back in 2005.
With just 2 in 5 (43.4%) children and young people aged 8 to 18 reporting that they enjoyed reading in their free time, this must act as a wake-up call for all those who support children and young people’s reading development. We need to have a conversation about how we motivate children to engage in reading.
In this session, Principal Educational Psychologist Dr David Lamb will talk to you about different types of motivation and how adopting a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) perspective when supporting reading development can enable intrinsic motivation to flourish.
David will also provide guidance on an effective reading strategy drawing upon SDT principles that adults can easily implement when helping children to read.
This session is suitable for anyone who wants to support children to read for pleasure whether this is at home or within the educational settings they work.
