Motivational interviewing: conversations for change within schools
- This event has passed.
Sometimes trying to offer support to adults working with children and young people does not always go as well as expected. To what extent are we able to stand in the shoes of a teacher or parent, and understand why change might be difficult? Motivational interviewing is a person-centred counselling style developed within the fields of substance use and healthcare, to support clients who are not always ready for change. Its philosophy, process and skills are potentially useful in school-based consultations to help develop motivation and confidence for change. This seminar will consider the following:
Why is change hard?
What helps people to think about change?
Why is empathy so important?
How are the philosophy, processes and skills of motivational interviewing helpful in conversations for change?
