Some topics deserve time and the opportunity to build on previous discussions to deepen our understanding together. That’s why we’re excited to introduce a new initiative: the edpsy Residency.
Over the years, our edpsy hosts events have brought together educational psychologists from across the UK and beyond to hear from leading researchers and practitioners. These one-off webinars have allowed us to explore a wide range of ideas and perspectives.
But sometimes, one session isn’t enough.
What is an edpsy Residency?
Each academic year, we want to invite one outstanding contributor to become our edpsy Resident, leading a connected programme of webinars that explores a topic in depth.
Rather than a collection of standalone sessions, the Residency is designed as a deep dive into theory, research and practice. Across the year, participants will have the opportunity to develop their thinking, revisit key ideas, and make connections that wouldn’t be possible in one-off event.
Each webinar can be attended independently, but together they form a coherent programme of professional learning.
Introducing our first Resident: Dr Sean Octigan
We’re thrilled that our inaugural edpsy Resident is Dr Sean Octigan.
Sean is an experienced Educational Psychologist who has worked in a variety of roles within the EP profession including as an EP within the local authority, as a tutor on the University of Sheffield doctoral training course for educational psychologists, and as an officer for the Association of Educational Psychologists, a trade union and professional body.
Sean has written widely read and well-received essays on politics, philosophy, and psychological theory and practice for edpsy and his own blog ‘Borrowed Language’. He is also a founding member of Educational Psychologists for Material Change, who have campaigned on issues such as trans rights and Palestinian rights.
This year’s Residency: Radical Psychology, Real Change
What if the biggest challenges facing psychology can’t be solved by simply doing more of the same? Across eleven webinars, Radical Psychology, Real Change explores a critique of contemporary psychology and offers a more politically engaged, socially responsive and radically different future for the profession.
