Project: Identifying the core components of school based EP consultation

This project aims to identify the core components of UK school-based consultation by Educational Psychologists (EPs).

In addition, the project will explore what are the potent skills of consultation which ought to be taught to Trainee Educational Psychologists (TEPs) on doctoral training programmes.

How you can help

If you are a qualified, HCPC registered Educational Psychologist (EP) of any grade (e.g. Principal, Senior or Main grade) in the United Kingdom, you can help by completing this survey, which will take approximately 15 minutes of your time.

After completing some basic identity information, you will be asked to rank different components of consultation and initial consultation training from most to least important.

Project focus

Whilst consultation continues to be the most prevalent way of working for EPs in the UK, there has been little research into what core components make up this effective and essential way of working. Due to incoherence in consultation skills across practice, there is a lack of consistent curriculum in initial consultation training for TEPs.

Leadbetter (2007) reports, there is often a huge gap between the expectations of newly trained EPs entering the profession and the realities they find in their first posts. Therefore, in order to prepare trainees for consultation post qualification, an appropriate consultation curriculum is needed (Kennedy et al., 2009).

Consequently, this study aims to:

  1. Gather the views of experienced EPs in identifying the core components of school-based consultation.
  2. Identify potent skills of school-based consultation for TEPs to learn about on doctoral training programmes.
